D&D General LotR and Forgotten Realms mashup - your thoughts?

Definitely the prior over the latter. You can drop anyone you want into the Forgotten Realms as long as it's small scale and it won't disrupt the balance. The Forgotten Realms is a world where every type of weirdo exists somewhere and the overall vibe accommodates it. It is a bristling, messy...

Star Wars: Ahsoka - Official Teaser Trailer

Or Marvel movies, which have gone full multiverse, or DC movies which are about to (with the Flash movie, but since that movie involves two Batmans it also seems worth pointing out that they also have both the "the Batman" movies in active production and the so-far-Batmanless "Joker" movies in...

D&D 5E (2024) Are Bishops "Clerics" or "Priests"

I mean one of the basic, often unspoken conceits of gaming is the idea that the boss has greater personal power compared to their followers. High status characters are expected to have high combat stats. It goes against the grain to make someone in a leadership positions just another commoner...

    TSR Appendix N Discussion

The issue, fundamentally, with all professional critics is that they are people who, as a job, have to digest media whether they like it or not, and have to digest it all with an eye towards creating a review with some sort of take on it (usually on a deadline). This leads to deeply loathing...

    Star Wars Outlaws

It looks like the game will have really cool cinematics. Hopefully the gameplay will also be impressive. I hadn't noticed until now that Disney is using the old "Lucasfilm Games" brand and logo from the 80s for their Star Wars games (and evidently has been since 2021). I don't know quite how to...

D&D 5E (2014) What houserules do we assume is common in the community?

Unless it is a very rigidly RAW DM I expect Nat 20s and 1s to get some sort of special treatment on ability checks. It may not be auto-success/failure per se, but the RAW approach of not making them special at all is clearly out of sync with the overall D&D zeitgeist of these rolls being...

D&D Movie/TV Should the D&D Movie Been Serious or Not Called D&D?

Indeed "flop" traditionally denotes a "total or spectacular failure". For a movie, the term is usually applied to one that absolutely hemorrhages money and/or one that is infamous in its production or marketing missteps (which sometimes includes movies that eventually show modest profits like...

D&D 5E (2014) What do you about dead levels in multiclassing?

It's not relevant for Rangers and Paladins. 5th level is when both of these classes gain access to their 2nd level spells. That might be a weak level-up without extra attack, depending on how you feel about the level two spells of those classes, but it isn't remotely "dead". You accept that some...

D&D 5E (2014) Should I keep shield prepared on an enchantment Wizard with instinctive charm?

I think it all depends on what percentage of the times you find yourself being attacked you are being attacked by a visible opponent within 30 feet, with the closest creature to it being someone you don't mind seeing hit, and you are only attacked a single time during that round. It also depends...

    Roman Bloodline?

    Most definitely.

    Roman Bloodline?

I remember looking into this at some point (I was a classics major who then got a history MA focusing on Medieval and Early Modern Europe, so it kind of went with the territory). I think I recall that there is a claim that the British royal family can trace lineage back to a specific Roman...

    D&D 5E (2014) So i created a boss for my game...

I can't opine on CR, because I pay very little attention to such things (and frankly, unless this is intended for publication, CR is mostly academic and you should focus more on how the monster you went to all the trouble of designing serves your specific encounter needs). Unlike some people I...

D&D General Some Interesting Stats About D&D Players!

I mean, you ignored the rest of the posting where I emphasized that I was not a conspiracy theorist, but rather someone who is just deeply cynical about things the people doing corporate PR say, whatever the corporation, specifically to head off anyone taking the comment in the light you just...

D&D General D&D Book Prices Are Going Up

Because I misread and thought the bundles were now the default, which you will note is a reasonable way to interpret the OP's summary of the press release. Indeed even now actually reading the press release I had to give it a couple passes before I could parse how it didn't say that (basically...

D&D 5E (2014) Power Word Kill Houserule: Any <100 hp within 1 minute

To me an ongoing effect of any type goes against the theme of the spell, which is the swift, brutal, "kill with a single, overpowered word of ancient, foundational magic". The instant success or failure is part of the vibe, the problem is simply that by time you gain access to it everything...

    The Future of Paramount+

I mean, maybe... but they are coming up against the tough fact that there is a soft limit on how many streaming services people will subscribe to, and streaming just isn't ever going to be profitable in 5th or 6th place (it isn't always in 1st through 4th, but those seem viable long term)...

D&D General D&D Book Prices Are Going Up

I mean I'd argue that for campaign books fewer pages is usually better. Whether or not that's true of adventures from other publishers, the problems with WotC approach to adventure design become much more apparent the more bloat it gets. I mean fundamentally a lot of bad habits of how...

D&D General Some Interesting Stats About D&D Players!

Or their data, as presented, is curated to justify their behavior. Look, I'm not some sort of anti-WotC hardliner conspiracy theorist, I own Hasbro stock for goodness sake. I'm not someone who rants about their agendas or whatever, I don't know to what extent they have one, and I don't care...

D&D General Some Interesting Stats About D&D Players!

That just emphasizes my point if we don't even know what the nature of the data collection here is at all. These reported statistics, as they have reached us, are so attenuated from whatever actual information WotC has that I just don't see the point of paying them mind.

D&D General D&D Book Prices Are Going Up

I can respect the inflation aspect, and I love physical/digital bundles in principle. But (at this juncture) I have no interest in D&D beyond, so the digital bundling feels less like a bonus and more like forcing me to buy something I don't want in order to buy the thing I do want.
