Homebrew [Tales of the Valiant] Suggestions for Continuing High Tier Play

Hmm. So you'll need ideas that account for demonic magic, adventuring as a viable career, world tainting, and a county run by vampires. How about the world blows up, and the PCs land on a tainted planet in a saucer-shaped globe of invulnerability, which includes red blankets that each PC uses...

    D&D 5E (2024) Ditching the Treasure Treadmill

Steal from rival kingdom: target on your back until the rival king is replaced by a lackey. Gift from the queen: oh, she'll never let you hear the end of that one. Favor for pirate captain: okay, the guy was old. But so was the ship. It won't hardly move, due to all the barnacles on the hull...

    D&D 5E (2024) Ditching the Treasure Treadmill

That sounds . . . circular ;) If OP is glad to not be using gold, great! But I'm agreeing: money is one way you navigate in-game problems. You can't throw XP at a problem to solve it, but GP work pretty well. PCs will easily get too much gold if you follow this weird rule that every creature...

    Zork 1-3 going open source

I'd stick to the CRPG. Zork has a bit much permadeath for the tastes of today's discursive RPG market, doesn't it?

D&D 5E (2024) Is 5E better because of Crawford and Perkins leaving?

    Does "better" include "more profitable?"

Worlds of Design: Live Long and Prosper

What's also cool is that we know first-hand what happens when high-tech/magic becomes commodified. People become wild and start roaming the streets in herds, staring downward into their trackers, claiming to "hunt Pokemon." So, it was paradise? Gotta have something for the working class to...

    Are You A GM?

Assuming this is a question: I don't generally click my way into threads just to say "no." At least, I'm trying to cut back on it 🤓

    Are You A GM?

The thread title is going to skew the results. I'd like to know what the title of the prior poll was.

Project Hail Mary | Official Trailer 2

I'm going to see it based solely on the tired millennial advertising technique of playing a moody version of a '90s classic song in the background in the hopes that I'll keep watching the trailer so I can hear just how the new version of the song plays out . . . predictable as it may be. Who...

    Play tester advice

I usually play D&D for $15 an hour plus free beer. Don't know how deep your pockets are . . . Or, if your game is close enough to D&D rules, don't say you're "playtesting." Just invite people to play with "some house rules," and directly ask their feedback every once in a while.

Natural 20/1 Crit fails and Crit successes, How do you handle them?

I've got it set up so the damage die opposes the protection die (but a successful hit always does damage). So if your d8 bastard sword is trying to pierce a d4 gambeson, you have a 1 in 32 (8 x 4) chance of doing 7 damage (8 - 1). With many of the outcomes being 1 damage, a 7 feels pretty...

    Why do we need thieves??

That sounds . . . cataclysmic. Case in point: Modos 2 (deluxe). Character options lean toward the Physical, Mental, or Metaphysical, with a "thief" suggested as a Mental character. Why suggest a thief? Because stealing stuff either leads to adventure, or it IS the adventure. Can't a...

Homebrew Need help with homebrewed Magic Surge mechanics

Welcome to the trenches! D&D's Tome of Magic (circa 1990) did something similar with Wild Magic. Each casting would roll on a table for power level variation, and there was a d100 table for wild surges (special spell results). It's worth a look if you have good Google-fu or a proper library...

D&D General ENWorld is better that the pundits…change my mind

That sounds difficult. I'd rather just click on the pundit video about it. Let's rejoice; the pundits will soon be gone . . . because AI won't even require clicking. I'll still be on ENworld. (So don't rejoice too much!)

    Why do we need thieves??

So some thief designers are saying, "okay, we handed out the special powers to the classes. Ugh, you know what we forgot? To make the classes that don't have special powers!" I'm skeptical. The need for thieves ( classes) is to fulfill the players' desire to emulate their favorite sneaky...

RPG Evolution: Nothing Goes to Waste

I knew cats had to be good for something! Having a mead horn is critical for most adventures. I also like to capture a siren whenever I can and strap it to the front of the wagon.

AD&D 1E What does this (d8, d6) dice notation mean in the DMG?

So (d8, d6) means "d4 be damned!" What was wrong with d20, reroll 17-20, I wonder?
