Your top 5 movie trilogies of all time, and why?

These are not movies but I love this choice (and you) anyway.

Your top 5 sci-fi movies (and why)

It's a fairy tale. In real life sometimes people DO feel moral shame and turn away from evil, but it's not reliable and it's not normally going to be at a dramatic moment. I think the message of the original story is sufficiently ambiguous that we can choose to take away a better one. I never...

Your top 5 sci-fi movies (and why)

Agreed. Luke was right. And he was winning when he was calm and controlled. It was when he lost faith in himself and in his father and let his anger take over that he nearly failed. The strength of passion and rage allowed him to beat down Vader (and even that was probably because deep-down...

OSR Fallen Elphame and the Halls of Knowledge

ASE seems more goofy/gonzo than you're aiming for, but I still think it'd be useful for you to check out in terms of organization and structure.

Your top 5 movie trilogies of all time, and why?

Any ordering? Given how few real trilogies are out there, maybe the meat of the discussion is in the ordering.

Your top 5 movie trilogies of all time, and why?

Spun off from the top 5 sci-fi films thread. Like that one, I'm asking for "your" top 5. So you can factor in historical importance and critical reception and all that, but I want your personal preferences and biases in there too. I'm not going to go as rules-heavy as Snarf. You can define a...

Your top 5 sci-fi movies (and why)

I always felt like that was implied, between their original intent to cook our heroes and the presence of empty storm trooper helmets being used as drums during the end celebration. :)

Your top 5 sci-fi movies (and why)

I have to disagree. I think they stick the landing despite the Ewoks. Even the battle on Endor has classic moments like Han and Leia and the bunker blast doors. I think the only film trilogy which tops it is LotR. Heck, I'm going to spin that off as a new thread.

Brava! Still a great post and series of thoughts. Thank you. :)

Your top 5 sci-fi movies (and why)

RotJ was my favorite film when I was a kid/teen. It would definitely still make my top 20, probably my top 15. While the Ewoks are silly it's still an extremely satisfying conclusion to the trilogy. Luke coming into his own as a "real" Jedi is just right, the space battle is epic, the whole...

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

Well, the word "taste" is in the rule. Whether the person applying that means it as respectful of the customer's wants, or a cynical moneymaking tactic, either way the customer gets treated with respect, right? And isn't entitled to demand whatever they want, as in the perverted truncated version.

Your top 5 sci-fi movies (and why)

I should probably put this in my also-rans too. It's pretty darn great. More of a top 20 contender than a top 10, though. And yes, the soundtrack is one of those 90s soundtracks that stick with you. I've listened to No White Clouds by Strangefruit repeatedly this year. And multiple Skunk...

Your top 5 sci-fi movies (and why)

I'm super torn over this one. The original theatrical version is the one I first fell in love with, but Ford did hate those voiceovers and phone them in, and the flatness of his performance on them is a thing. I think the Director's Cut (without the voiceovers and with the dream) edges out the...

Your top 5 sci-fi movies (and why)

Mostly. "Hornblower in space", sure. It's got a few other things going for it. Montalban is excellent and totally challenges Shatner for scenery-chewing, giving us a distinctive and memorable villain for the ages. The ceti eels are horrifying (scarred me as a kid) and fun. The climax...

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

But she ASKED. So that doesn't run afoul of the maxim. And while she did ask, if you had fewer products/options available in the color you thought was nicer, you'd have lost out on sales. But mostly it's about the fact that she asked for that feedback. You didn't try to convince her not to...

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

Absolutely. The classic example I always hear, though, is about the ugly hat. If the customer wants to buy a hat you think is ugly, just sell it to them! Each person is right in matters of their own personal taste.

Your top 5 sci-fi movies (and why)

Oh indeed. Point of order- the thread asked "your top 5" not "the top 5". I answered it as such. ;) I think it would be a much more boring and uniform thread if we were all going primarily on historical importance and significance. Just shuffling around the order for Star Wars, The Matrix...

    Our Physical Fitness

Got back in last night and did almost the same workout as Saturday morning. Three circuits of dumbbell bench, dumbbell inclined curls, dumbbell skull crushers, and dumbbell seated lateral raises, but only doing drop sets on the third circuit. Except I did drop sets every time with the curls...

Your top 5 sci-fi movies (and why)

That's a killer list. Five is hard to do, but this is my best attempt for today: 5. The Terminator. Barely edged out T2 for me, in part because some of the humor in T2 is a little lame. Just a super tight, suspenseful script and story. Both have amazing scores. 4. Blade Runner. Some bits of...
