I don't get the arguments for bioessentialism

Often when doom-scrolling with insta or youtube shorts I come across some interesting info re an animal/insect characteristic etc and I save it with the intention of using in my game and sharing that appreciation of the marvel of our world with my friends and sadly I don't get to it. Yet another...

Always felt WotC and perhaps even the DMsGuild have dropped the ball on this!

And others of us accept that D&D does simulation well enough. I took a long time with that last sentence. No judgement was intended but rather an explanation as to where that freedom of design originates from.

I never used the word priority. However my table is currently 15th level, so it is pretty important to me that when there is combat it doesn't devolve into a boring slog-fest. Which means I'm always looking at ways to make it interesting. TBH minions is a concept I had forgotten until this...

I tend to read @clearstream's comment as one said in jest, not for serious discussion. :ROFLMAO:

Sometimes things can be improved upon - I've done that with every edition, 4e is not the exception.

Oh that is a fine idea! I've used proficiency bonus and constitution modifier in the past but I really like yours too.

Me to, but since we chose D&D we got the mystery that is hit points. That is why I feel the 5e's Damage Threshold works well with the concept of the 4e minion. I do not believe that was the intention. Crushing their shin with a mallet thus rendering them prone, and practically immobile and...

I'm of the opinion this came down to the understanding of the game. Those that ran it for me and even when I started running it battled because of our lack of understanding, I feel.

I do not agree, since I consider both obstacles to be overcome by the PCs, not that I'm in favour of doors having their DCs changed depending on the PC's level or the area's level, funnily enough. I prefer more consistency on that issue. I quite like having the freedom to treat monsters as...

Bold emphasis mine. These do not naturally occur. They occur by design. i.e. Design leads to having us play solve it at higher levels.

4e got a lot of criticism from the sim crowd about how the opening of doors supposedly had shifting DCs depending on one's level on this very forum. I cannot remember the outcome of those debates but if the opening of a door DCs shifts because of the ever-changing math as your character...

Yes, the designers did a poor job. I use a combination of tools to assist against such sad outcomes, some of which are Hit Points I have a table for how hit points are calculated and they are dependent on if the creature is a standard, elite, named etc Touch Attacks for ethereal creatures...

Bold emphasis mine. Just keep in mind about the game you're referring to...and why and how the math changed.

No I do not see the difference. See below. I imagine I'm not alone when I was playing 1e-3e where there were good and bad NPCs and they were fighting I would use DM decides as to what happens, thereby degrading the NPCs as I see fit. And then when the PCs intervened I would not make those...

Who is in charge of designing monsters and challenges for the encounter? And how is that different from ANY D&D game where the GM changes up the monsters and challenges? When a GM changes up a 5e monster per WotC published material do you call that a serious house ruling? Do you ever have good...

I think it is because it is easier to just create a minion monster for an encounter than deal with the game repercussions of walking deities.

I do not think the disparity of hit points between minions and others was an issue for 4e. I'm not sure sim was a concern given math of the game. What do you mean by groups?

Particularly hard is subjective. Skill Challenges were formalised in DMG2. Half the usual playable races and classes were in PHB2. The issue of how things were released in 4e is not new, but I do not think you can draw the conclusion you have drawn. Let's move past the goblins shall we? The...

Ok, I replied to Lanefan who was making the case that the lich's stats did not change from level to level when you encountered it. It was not a comment about appropriate creatures based on level. That is great lore for a weaker form of lich. I'm sure you agree in that that the vestige is very...
