Lol. We aren't narrative, I have no real experience with playing narrative games. I'd be doing a massive disservice to that style I think. It's only what I've picked up from here, links provided by narrative players and some youtubes. We've got a hybrid thing going on in a traditional D&D...

He's joining our table, our ways. If I were joining another table I'd acclimatize to their style of play. We have a reward system in play and decisions like the one he made would exclude him from such reward system. In any event I asked when he picks his character's TIBFs he considers how easy...

The game was created with hit points and never moved past that point. That doesn't conflict with the fact that many simulationists prefer to remove/reject neo-gamist techniques or add-ons. For example many dislike Inspiration. And I'm sure you'd agree it is much easier to reject/remove gamist...

I mentioned it upthread that D&D sadly trains players to act in ways that many DMs feel is out of character for their creations. Lanefan mentioned a similar thing that only rational choices are made which always happen to be the most optimal. The game promotes min/maxing due to its style of play...

Out of interest Micah in the D&D games you run do you allow NPCs to persuade and/or intimidate PCs via the skill system?

True. But that doesn't mean that crowd wishes for MORE gamist structures.

D&D worships at the altar of the HP god. Character death is very much part of the game. Many rules revolve around dying and death. Has the game pushed the envelope further from perma-death over the years with hit point bloat, permanent level and ability drain, Revivify, death saves, save end...

In 5e different rules exist already in character creation.

D&D General How Do I Help Mentor a GM Making Rookie Mistakes?

Exactly. There are a number of ways this can be done... Reduce starting point buy Make Long Rest require 24 hours or longer Increase damage by monsters by a die Give monsters a Feat or Class Feature for every 4 HD. ...etc

    Any Good Puzzle Resources?

You could run through some of the Dark Parable puzzles which are free on YouTube. Some of them are suited for younger players but they may prove inspirational. I'm also a fan of the soundtracks of the ones my wife has played (the first 5)

I do not think we should be reflecting the argument as an either or. Item loss is a consequence that many simulationists adhere to. I do though think a GM has to be careful how they navigate the fiction for the item loss. And I believe that is where you are coming from, in that we cannot be...

Just so I understand your concern, the idea is that making consequences known breaks immersion as it opens up negotiation. So is your preferred method for the consequences to be unknown until the die is rolled? Kind of like combat, where the PCs are NOT always aware of their opponent's...

Interestingly enough the PC had suspected the use of Detect Thoughts/ESP at the meeting (he uses it himself sometimes) and he had informed me that he was filtering his surface thoughts with nonsense. He was not aware that I was going to lean on his Flaw (final decision being his of course) But...

A PC was negotiating with NPCs in Sigil. One of the NPCs used Detect Thoughts which allows one to pick up surface thoughts for free (i.e. no saving throw required). NPC asked a question on information the PC did not wish to reveal. One of the PC's Flaws were (paraphrasing) Cannot keep a secret...

I disagree with chucking them all out. As it happens in D&D, GM decides if the persuasion has a probability of working on an NPC. If No, then no roll is required. If Yes, then I like the fact that it doesn't fall on me, but rather to mechanics. Now with PC NPC attempts to persuade PC. I...

Game trains you so badly that interesting things happen when you're bored. As opposed to Level Drain, Sex Change and Alignment Change? Granted we also had Ability Drain and Aging. And no my system uses your character's TBIF to reward you for following them when it serves against the rational...

D&D General More details on what to expect from the Player's Guide to the Forgotten Realms from Polygon, Massive Amount of Spells & Feats

I'm looking forward to it since we are into the higher levels at our table, so this is in line with our long-term campaign and currently in FR. No one at my table purchased the 2024 core, and I do not have the 5e's Sword Coast Adventurers Guide so this could work for us.

D&D 5E (2014) Can you retry a failed skill check? How long?

And yet this system is used for combat. Increase the stakes with each additional attempt. Attempt to Lockpick Increase the time (1 minute, 10 minutes, 20 minutes etc) with each attempt and roll for a Random Encounter every hour or less depending on traffic in that area. Also every attempt...

We do very much the same, it is discussed openly at the table amongst us all, we look at the TIBFs and if we can apply that in some way, but in the end the player decides if it can happen and if dice are needed for resolution purposes. The player gets to determine the DC if dice are to be used.
