    D&D 5E (2014) Is D&D combat fun?

DMG pg 84 suggests that the typical group should be able to handle 6-8 encounters medium or hard encounters per day before taking a long rest. While not a hard and fast rule per se, it's a parameter that's clearly laid out. I shall return to the shadows now, lurking and observing with my popcorn.

D&D 5E (2014) Temple of Elemental Evil is the next Original Adventures Reincarnated

Toronto stores received theirs on Tuesday, I went down and got my copy. It went straight to the shelf where it will likely not see play for a very long time, but at least the collection looks all purty and complete!:cry:

    D&D General Time in RPGs

For dungeon crawling, I use a tally counter and click off the rounds and turns they spend, noting the count where they light torches or spells are cast etc. Random encounters in the dungeon occur based on the appropriate frequency of the encounter for the dungeon. For date keeping, I have a...

D&D General How Was Your Last Session?

1e Continues... The team had spent a few weeks training, where everyone made level 2, and one made level 3. Royal proclamation indicated that the area where they'd buried the 750lbs of electrum was now off limits until further notice, and despite the Chaotics in the group insisting that they...

    AD&D 1E Common House Rules for AD&D?

The most common house rule I've ever seen is something to boost 1st level hit points. Either just starting with Maximum, or some kind of double roll, or weird algorithm. I have only ever played one game where it was a straight roll and you kept what you got. For my own part, I have a list of...

Rules FAQ How Does Surprise Work in D&D 5E?

I disagree, I love 1e surprise. Though I do understand why people aren't fond of it by virtue of the way it's written up... a good rule presented poorly. Once you have a good procedure for it step-by-step, it works really well, and characters that specialize in surprise and stealth (Hello...

Rules FAQ How Does Surprise Work in D&D 5E?

1e and 2e were a bit different from each other. I'll try and be brief as it's a 5e surprise thread... don't want to get accused of going too far off topic. 1e was a d6 roll, 1-2 indicated surprise, and the # you rolled indicated how much surprise. ie: you roll a 2, and you are surprised...

Still waiting for my local stores to get their copies here in Canada. Permission to squee?

Rules FAQ How Does Surprise Work in D&D 5E?

Yeah, 1e is my main game. Surprise, as with many of 1e's rules, is a little muddled in presentation, but I have it smoothed out to something good. In the 5e games I have played (both as DM and player), surprise rarely happens, and when it does it's usually a non event. For whatever reason, the...

D&D General What's the Most Valuable DM Prep Between Campaigns?

Well, for my own part, my regular game ended in a bit of a TPK last year, and due to the pandemic we went on hiatus and I ended up with a year between games... during that time I codified my house rules into an organized document; reread the books; and started laying out adventure threads. I...

Rules FAQ How Does Surprise Work in D&D 5E?

I do like keeping the passive perception, personally, because then it's still relevant. Just only use the highest active value, as opposed to everyone's. Most average PP scores that I've seen hover in the 13-14 range (barring outliers for Observant etc), so you're looking at a roughly 30%...

Rules FAQ How Does Surprise Work in D&D 5E?

Just brainstorming here, but how about something like this: In the case of general surprise chances, where both groups are unaware of each other: Both sides roll d20 against the best passive perception of the group. Natural 20 always indicates surprise, regardless of whether PP is over 20...

D&D General Do you play D&D (or other RPGs) with your family?

I introduced my niece to it 8 yrs ago in her late teens, she’s still with the group. Aside from that, not so much. Most of my family isn’t into any sort of gaming. Blasted killjoys! 🤬

D&D General Mechanical differences between AD&D and Basic?

What Lanefan said. I am constantly adapting Basic modules and 2nd Edition modules into my 1st ed campaign with minimal adjustments. Mainly some monsters have different stats and abilities, but it's a simple matter of reviewing in advance and making sure there's nothing too glaring.

D&D General Tell me about your campaign

I am running a sandbox style game, and currently the PCs are in Cormyr. And since I just printed up a PDF copy of the Cormyr sourcebook I bought on Drive Thru RPG for the purpose... those bastards had better stay there for a while! The system is AD&D 1st Ed - The team consists of...

    D&D 5E (2014) Looting during combat wtf ?

Your reaction to events is entirely your prerogative. If your Warlock is the type to get offended by it, then call them out in character at the table. If you don't care, then so be it, let it slide. This, of course, assumes reasonable players who get that you are role playing, and their...

D&D General How Was Your Last Session?

My 1st Edition campaign continues: The previous week, our intrepid explorers had defeated the Wyrmling green dragon, but one of their number was dead and two in critical condition unable to travel for at least a week. So they set up camp in the dragon's lair! Being a wyrmling it didn't have a...

D&D General How Was Your Last Session?

With everyone in our circle double vaxxed, we returned to live play for my 1e campaign. When last we played, the group had been TPK'd** by a false hydra, but scored a Pyrrhic victory by destroying its food source and ending the threat. ** two absent players from the adventure survived, but...
