    D&D 5E (2014) Which played-out D&D trope needs to die?

1st level characters with an epic 10 + page backstory in which they have survived enough trials and adventure to level them to 20.

    D&D 5E (2014) How many house rules?

I am torn on the subject of House Rules... I certainly use them and have a fair amount for both systems (my regular 1e and upcoming 5e)... yet I am oddly elitist when it comes to OTHER people's house rules and am often put off by them. I suppose my views and application of house rules has been...

D&D 5E (2014) PC races that a DM has specifically excluded from their campaign and why

I would basically keep to core PHB options, and while I wasn't originally enthralled by either Dragonborn or Tieflings, they have grown on me so I keep them. Though anything from expansions (class or race) is an automatic no-go.

D&D 5E (2014) [Hit Points] What method do you use to determine HP after level 1?

Soloing a brand new player with a 1st level, 1hp mage into the Caves of Chaos... yes that is indeed a very clueless (or young and inexperienced) DM, yikes!

D&D 5E (2014) [Hit Points] What method do you use to determine HP after level 1?

No free rides, we don't play 'easy mode' here. You roll that die and keep the result, and keep your whinging about it to a minimum or I bring back level drain mechanics for undead creatures, mofos. :devilish: Oh, and btw - CON bonuses only apply once at first level only. Suck on that whilst...

Worlds of Design: To Move or Not to a New Edition?

For me, it's been more of a back and forth... nothing so straightforward as moving to something 'new' and leaving the older behind. If anything, these days I'm more inclined to go retro... I started with BECMI as a kid, had the 1e books but never quite played them, and as a teen moved away from...

D&D General Mechanical differences between AD&D and Basic?

Hey guys, I'm not sure... just a feeling, but I think it's possible Snarf doesn't like Bards. Just spitballing, I mean, I don't want to assume or anything... As for the differences between AD&D and Basic... well... that's a rather extensive list. AD&D basically dials the minutiae to...

    D&D General First D&D Character?

My very first PC was Diaz the Elf... playing in the BECMI system. He had several adventures, including one where he gained controlled Lycanthropy after being bitten by a wererat, (but for some reason changing into a werewolf because it was cooler than being a rat, and we were 13 years old and...

D&D General On how many dice we use

    *sigh... I hear that....

    D&D General 3'33" scale per 1" square

Oh god... I'm already there... I use the WSG weather rules, but need the Farenheit to Celsius conversion chart on hand for my own sake. My mind is hardwired to Celsius when it comes to temperature, so values in Farenheit mean nothing to me and throw me off every time.

D&D General On how many dice we use

I certainly am guilty of owning more dice than I need... particularly novelty dice. As DM I generally keep about 4-5 sets handy at any given time, especially extra d6s. As a player I only have 1 or 2 sets with me. Playing online means using online dice rollers... but in-person, I MUST. HAVE...

    D&D General 3'33" scale per 1" square

I think a metric conversion for 1st ed would probably be the most intuitive... A 1-inch (25mm) square on a battlemat would become a 1 meter square, then everything else is factored in meters without any real issue. The actual difference between 3.33ft and 1 meter isn't hugely relevant...

    D&D General 3'33" scale per 1" square

The beautiful thing about it is how it aligns with the movement rates for a smooth conversion when determining per-segment movement. Indoor movement scale (and combat movement), which is 1" = 10ft, means a character simply needs to divide their base movement rate by 3 to find their per-segment...

D&D General What Is Your D&D Survivor Edition?

1e here for me. I have some appreciation of each of the various editions for different reasons, but 1e just has 'something' that the others lack. It's more than merely nostalgia, it simply has a magic to it that I can't quantify, and no other edition seems to manage. (For me, at least)

D&D General How do you handle doubling of classes?

As DM I have no say in what the players wish to play, beyond the parameters I've set for the campaign. There's no need or even reason to ban multiples of the same class. In fact, doubling up can be fairly advantageous - especially in old school where multiple fighters in a group increases...

    AD&D 1E Giving an AD&D feel to 5e

Yeah, 5e seems predicated on the notion that players will have more fun if they hit more often, so I've noticed that hits occur about 2/3rds of the time, where in old school (at least at low levels) you were hitting less than 1/3rd of the time. I have no doubt that lead to the escalation of hit...
