    D&D 3.x Still playing 3e? Share your 3.0 and/or 3.5 house rules

I am not playing 3E anymore and don't really intend to, but a discussion of saving throws reminded me of a few pecularities in 3E that I might wish to fix: Base Attack Progression Classses with +1 BAB per Level gain a progression of 4 per level. Classses with 3/4 BAB per level gain a...

    Battletech Public Playtest Thread

An idea that had occurred for me in terms of hit location splits and the like: When a hit location is chosen (randomly or by called shot), and a weapon has some kind of spray/clustering feature implied (long burn lasers, missile clusters, whatever), the defender may split the damage (rounding...

New Star Trek Movie Coming From D&D Movie Creators

Oh yeah, that would be like that one episode of TOS. It would really be bad! (At least a bad episode. :p )

D&D General [+] More Robust 'Fantasy Race' Mechanics for D&D-alikes / Redeeming 'Race as Class' for Modern D&D [+]

Monte Cook's Unearthed Arcana and even more so Arcana Evolved also featured racial classes and paragon classes. Most noteworthy there might be the Giants, who would even grow to large size, and Faen, who could change into flying Sprytes. Eberron also had a kind of "racial-adjacent" feature with...

D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

Here is the thing: I don't actually see any value in players not being able to target a weak save. It just means that by random chance, sometimes a player character can't contribute with their useful spells. Is that really great? Or alternatively, it means a spell casters entire effectiveness...

D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

Some uproars can be weathered, though. Stun is whatever the game rules say it is, there is no hard-determined real world description for it, it covers a wide range of possible states it might describe, unlike, say "dead".

D&D General 5E species with further choices and differences

In the end, there is always an implied setting the moment they put in Elves and Dwarves, basically. Especially if they describe the Elves as pointy eared and medium sized and dwarves as typically bearded. And D&D usually also adds gods (and that you can have Clerics of gods) and stuff like that...

D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

I like the idea of being able to sense the spell resistance and deciding what to do, but in the end, it is just another form of "saving throw" (or attack roll). Is there really a benefit from adding that extra layer? Why couldn't the enemy's defense or saving throw just be higher, isn't the end...

D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

No, I am not saying a stun spell doesn't stun. I am saying the condition stun could be a condition where you can still do things. Maybe not all of them, or only for a price. Maybe you cannot do the fancy cool stuff, like reactions, bonus actions, casting non-cantrips and making multi-attacks...

D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

The outcome of a save is binary, but a saving throw "ability" more than bad or good. That's just 5E's approach because it only has proficient or not proficient by default. You could easily have 3 steps, bad, moderate and strong. And if your game had conceptual design space for monsters that...

D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

I don't agree that they should stick with 6 saves. I think having so many is particularly a reason why it is so difficult to target them equally in frequency or power, there is too much to go around, and the thematic differentiation isn't really clear. And it's perfectly fine if a party has the...

D&D General Explain 5(.5)e to me

Yeah, but it was an observation that I also made in the post you quoted, so I suspected that you might not have completed reading it.

D&D General Explain 5(.5)e to me

My first RPG experience I made when I was around 18 or 19, and my first game was Shadowrun 3E. Shadowrun is as setting mixing cyberpunk and fantasy. It has no classes or levels, you just equipped gear - perhaps cyberware and learned different skills. In that edition, every character had 10...

    What was your 2nd RPG?

Dungeons & Dragons 3E. It was a silly game, it had a video-gamey hit point mechanic - they even rise with levels (did I mention this is so videogamey yet?), so they don't seem to represent wounds like in a proper roleplaying game, basically entirely nonsensical and unimmersive. And the spells...

D&D General Am I crazy (BBEG idea)

In case he is an unwilling Nightmare, and you still want to avoid a solo combat against a single Nightmare, consider giving him some nightmare or (were)-friends that are attracted by his appearance and protect him. If it's a curse, maybe the Nightmares seek to make the effect permanent. Maybe...

D&D General Am I crazy (BBEG idea)

I don't know what numbers there are too crunch, are there rules for creating custom were-creatures? I'd say the idea might have some merit. Though: Is lycantrophy really "needed" here? I assume there are rules for dealing with lycantrophy, but maybe it would work just as well if it's a unique...

Homebrew Star Wars D6 - Exposure to Vacuum Rules

I don't really know enough about Star Wars d6 to give any specific rules advice. Are you required to decide which skill to use? Maybe the player simply uses the better one - the smart guy is doing stuff to help his body deal with the vacuum better, the Wookie just has better endurance? Exposure...

    Draw Steel General Thread [+]

Warhammer 3E really had a system with basically cooldown markers, 4E just basically used something like I think Magic with tapped/untapped. But in general cards are useful if game abilities can be condensed and be treated isolated, based on something like a template - like D&D spells since...

D&D General Has Tiny Hut actually affected your game? Or has it otherwise mattered?

They kept the name from 4E, they didn't change! It's not like 5E and 4E were developed in parallel!
