What do you, personally, need a system to do for you?

These days, unless you're AD&D, I don't want a system that makes me learn a ton of sub-systems and exceptions.

    Magazines Dragon Reflections #92

The Bridge of Sorrows is a crackling good cover. The way the lightning draws you towards the wyvern, creating a tension with the action in the lower left is pretty great. While I don't know about outright banning certain spells from clerics, I think that it behooves the PC to choose their deity...

    IN REMEMBRANCE--2025

I watched Alligator when I was way too young.

Your most "visceral" experience at a movie theater.

100% The original Star Wars trilogy would not have been the same without his music. It gives just enough time for the 20th Century Fox theme to fade away. Then a moment like a paused breath. And boom.

Same. There's something about when that opening fanfare hits and the scroll starts up in front of any Star Wars movie. It's like some instinctual nostalgic lizard brain thrill.

Goodman Games Revives Relationship With Anti-Semitic Publisher For New City State Kickstarter [UPDATED]

Oh yeah, there is value being added with the OAR products. Goodman Games gives these old products the deluxe treatment every time. For me, it's more meaningful to have an original copy, but I can see how people might feel otherwise.

Goodman Games Revives Relationship With Anti-Semitic Publisher For New City State Kickstarter [UPDATED]

I think part of the original Judges Guild's charm was that degree of roughness. The poor paper quality, the limited colors of the art, not to mention some of the quality thereof. I have never heard about the "Pete Rose asterisk" before. Learn something new every day. Huh, so it will actually...

Goodman Games Revives Relationship With Anti-Semitic Publisher For New City State Kickstarter [UPDATED]

Assuming a price point of at least what OAR #7: Dark Tower had for print + PDF, this is probably going to cost at least $100. It costs in the range of $20-80 more on eBay for a vintage copy of CSIO, depending on seller, condition, and printing edition. That's not much of a difference, and if I...

What are you reading in 2025?

A couple re-reads for me. Re-read Martha Wells' All Systems Red. On a second read, I liked it much more. Then re-read John Shirley's Eclipse. John Shirley saw the writing on the wall with the threat of American christofascism, even the return of a Le Pen to France, back in the 80s. There's still...

D&D General grodog's Top 10 Favorite Greyhawk Adventures

I'd probably put Village of Hommlett at number 1. To me, that's the platonic ideal of an AD&D adventure in Greyhawk. I'm surprised to see Mordenkainen's Fantastic Adventure rated so highly. To me it's got too many gotcha tricks and traps for my tastes.

Your most "visceral" experience at a movie theater.

As kids, my brother and I went to see Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan with our dad. We'd already been exposed to TOS, and seeing Spock's death was an emotional punch we weren't prepared for. Also, those dang Ceti Eels... Later on, going to see Bram Stoker's Dracula was a theater experience I've...

Goodman Games Revives Relationship With Anti-Semitic Publisher For New City State Kickstarter [UPDATED]

My dad experienced antisemitism growing up. I experienced antisemitism growing up. The difference is social media, I think. Bigots have always been bigots where they've felt safe. And on social media some people still feel completely insulated from consequences, despite numerous FAFO incidents...

Goodman Games Revives Relationship With Anti-Semitic Publisher For New City State Kickstarter [UPDATED]

Jew and longtime Judges Guild collector here. Having bought all my stuff second-hand, I've never given a cent to Bledsaw II & III, nor will I. As far as I'm aware, Bledsaw II didn't have anything to do with the original Judges Guild stuff. The last player I had with an "edgy" sense of humor got...

D&D 5E (2024) OAR 10 City State of the Invincible Overlord

That's kinda my sentiment. I have an original CSIO already, and it would not be that hard at all to use with DCC RPG. So a glory hole mine is a mine in "which the main shaft is sunk by blasting; the muck is then dumped in the central glory hole, previously constructed by a raise borer." Not...

D&D 5E (2014) If you could run or play in any D&D 5e campaign right now, which would it be?

Out of the Abyss. The first time, I had a bunch of very murderhobo-y players in my gaming group. I'd love to give it another shot with new players.

The Last of Us (HBO Max)

Same and same. After it, we were talking about how back in the day with The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones, how we had certain friends on social media that were always spoiling those shows. To give warning would've taken away from the heavy blow of it, the heartache.

Computer games and the save checkpoint system

Unless it's a Soulsborne game, give me the ability to save whenever I want. Same. Having save points is one thing. Having save points and having to manage your ribbon inventory (on top of a generally miserly inventory system) was just too much.

    Let's Talk About Short Campaigns

Dragon of Icespire Peak was one of my favorite D&D campaigns. I think there's plenty of room for shorter, self-contained campaigns alongside massive years-long campaigns. Nothing wrong with stringing shorter campaigns into story arcs of a larger whole, either. As I've gotten burned out on "save...

What Do YOU Want The Future of TTRPGs To Look Like?

In general, I want RPGs to trend towards simplicity. D&D's new edition is an increase in complexity, and I don't want to see that spread. The only place I'd like to see AI in gaming is in organizing information. A chatbot that can tell me everything that happened in 1369 DR, or the crime rates...

Do All of Your RPG Maps Now Belong To Judges Guild? ... and more?

Huh - just goes to show how subjective maps can be. I got the most mixed up when linking the levels up with each other. Huh. In hindsight, I should have done that. Will do if I ever re-run Ravenloft.
