D&D General 5.5 PHB Species Options

My first 5E character was a human fighter so I get it, but I'm surprised it's THAT far ahead of everything else. Then again starting with two Feats is pretty big even if they're limited to Oregano Feats.

Gary is that you? Have you returned as Gygax the White?

D&D General Need Help: Most Used Monsters From Monster Manuals

Honestly a huge chunk of my Monster Manual usage has been humanoids. Orcs, Gobins, Mages, and even the humble Thug (now called Tough in the newer Monster Manual). I've gotten a lot more mileage about of VGM and MTOF since I actually owned those books on Roll20 before I did the Monster Manual.

    D&D General Self-Defeating Rules in D&D

I would like to point out that even in Lord of the Rings, Gandalf cast seemingly at-will magical light on his staff and Frodo had the Light of Eärendil... so magic light sources predate D&D in fantasy by decades if not centuries.

D&D 5E (2024) Conjure elemental makes no sense...

I mean yeah it's worded differently than 5E spells usually are and I have no idea why but... like I dunno. It still makes senese to me.🤷‍♂️

D&D 5E (2024) Conjure elemental makes no sense...

Because if it fails the first save, it gets to repeat the save to end the Restrained condition. It's using one line to cover both succeeding on the initial save (thus never becoming Restrained) and succeeding on the subsequent saves (thus ending the Restrained condition).

D&D General Why do we color-code Dragons?

That's... a nonsequitor. Dragons are different species, humans are just different phenotypes of the same species.

    D&D 5E (2024) 5.5 Fighter Best Eince 2E

Yeah the problem is that Indomitable was kind of... situational before. If you flubbed a good Fighter save like STR then sure, you could roll it again and probably succede. But if you're targeted at a save you're already bad at, then rolling again probably won't help you that much. Especially...

    D&D 5E (2024) 5.5 Fighter Best Eince 2E

Okay but is it really better than the 4E Weapon Master? Because that remains the gold standard of Fighters IMO.

Wait why? Indomitable is awesome now.

D&D General Why do we color-code Dragons?

I do find it a bit odd that dragons being color coded is considered cheesy considering it happens along familial lines. I wouldn't expect a pair of Clydesdale horses to produce a little pony.

D&D 5E (2024) NPCs, and the poverty of the core books

Honestly my favorite 'PC Wizard' statblock is the Legendary Archmage from Monster Manual Expanded 3. I think it's a good compromise between usability (It has a post-MPMM style spell list) and not having completely arbitrary At-Will powers.

    D&D General Self-Defeating Rules in D&D

Honestly even if torches are seldom used I've never had trouble making darkness matter in my 5E Game... unless there was a Twilight Cleric in the party.

    D&D General Self-Defeating Rules in D&D

Yeah I would probably just adopt a version of my Spelljammer ship rules. Slow the turns down so that they take place over several minutes to account for how slow aquatic ships are by comparison.

    D&D General Self-Defeating Rules in D&D

I'm not sure why the latter part couldn't work, the pirate campaign, even in 5E.

D&D 5E (2024) NPCs, and the poverty of the core books

Max level fighters saving on a 2 across the board in RC was nuts. You got a 95% chance of success. Even the 4E Fighter ain't that tough.

D&D 5E (2024) NPCs, and the poverty of the core books

But why tho? This is where you're losing me. Mechanical consistency is useful, but not at the expense of playability. Representing an NPC the same way as you would a PC of the same level leads to multi-page statistics full of mostly-useless information that isn't going to even be relevant when...
