    RPGs with Bespoke Colony-Building Rules

The past 5 years, I've been diving deep into survival colony builder video games. RimWorld, Dwarf Fortress, Oxygen Not Included, Norland, Stranded: Alien Dawn, Clanfolk all have 50+ hours of play (30x that for RW lol), so I obviously like this kind of game. But, I've never really thought about...

What Do You Think Of As "Modern TTRPG Mechanics"?

For sure. I wasn't really making an agreement either way, just pointing out something interesting.

What Do You Think Of As "Modern TTRPG Mechanics"?

That's interesting, because the latter looks more like something one could have pulled from the 1e PHB, the former from 3e or later.

What Do You Think Of As "Modern TTRPG Mechanics"?

The modernity comes from the innovation in these mechanisms. Yes, most mechanisms used today were born in the 19th century, but they've evolved a lot as they've been streamlined and shaped to the games they are used in. For example, progress clocks were likely a result of earlier shot clock...

Will the complexity pendulum swing back?

I can't speak for people, but I think it's just newer designs in newer games.

Will the complexity pendulum swing back?

The post above yours. Hopefully that will get the gun pointed away from me lol

Will the complexity pendulum swing back?

Ah, I see the confusion now. I didn't say anything about innovations in tactical play. Not to say there isn't any, I'm sure there are examples. But I meant that modern mechanisms being added around the tactical play to modern games. Things like the group skill check from 4e, which has been...

Will the complexity pendulum swing back?

Thanks, but no, that was well later. I just said new games can bring innovations. I didn't realize that was controversial.

Will the complexity pendulum swing back?

It was a joke that you decided to take seriously. Why did you do that?

Will the complexity pendulum swing back?

You're right my bad, there have been no new rpg mechanisms since white box dnd.

Will the complexity pendulum swing back?

You want me to go over all the changes in RPGs? Am I getting paid for this?

Will the complexity pendulum swing back?

To get semantical, choosing PC abilities would be strategy, choosing how to use them as you play would be tactical. Moving a representation over a playing space and using abilities to exert influence on that space is a tactical game, whether rpg, video game, board game, minis game. Draw Steel...

Will the complexity pendulum swing back?

There are plenty of rpg mechanisms that have come about in the past 20 years that weren't in the 30 years previous. Like most everything, RPGs have evolved over the years. It's odd that this doesn't go without saying, tbh.

Will the complexity pendulum swing back?

Okay, if we're taking this seriously, I think it's pretty self-explanatory. It should be tactical and have modern mechanisms. Draw Steel, as an example.

Poll: VTT Users - Do you prefer self-hosted or cloud-based VTTs?

Those that say automation is video-game-ish...if I played any video game that ran with even more automation than my most automated FG game, I'd wonder how such a janky game was released lol

Fabula Ultima Hardback & Bestiary Vol. 1 Kickstarter

Yeah, I'm not a fan of the newer FFs or the FF7 remake because of the change to real time.

No, it's turn-based with a situational timer. It's kind of like ADnD's weapon speeds.

My fav old school jrpgs are Chrono Trigger, FF6 (FF3 in US), FF7, FF Tactics, FF Tactics Advanced 1 &2. Newer games are Persona 5, Octopath Traveler 1 and 2, Triangle Strategy, Valkyria Chronicles 1 and 4. Edit: Forgot Fire Emblem Three Houses. That was a great game.

Will the complexity pendulum swing back?

To be fair, modern tactical games didn't exist in the old days either lol
