Ben Riggs: 'The Golden Age of TTRPGs is Dead'

Strange. I don't GM in Foundry because of I've been using FG so long, it feels pointless to change vtts without a really good reason. However, both of my curent games are far from ending, and I really wanted to play Daggerheart, so I'm playing in a game that uses Foundry and it's pretty simple...

Does Your Game Have Random Encounters?

I've flipped and flopped on this over the years. I like how randomness can be used creatively, but I prefer potential combat scenes to be meaningful, so I use it sparingly.

Daggerheart "Description on Demand" a GM DON'T

Man, Amber drpg was such a cool idea that I had so much trouble wrapping my brain around lol

Cool in the 90's, hot garbage now. Then again, that could be said about so many things these days lol

Daggerheart "Description on Demand" a GM DON'T

It's kind of part-and-parcel. In DH, you aren't supposed to come to the game with a long, thought-out backstory. One, to be more malleable during session zero world building, but also, two, so that when one "paints the scene", they can use it as an opportunity to tell the table more about their...

Daggerheart "Description on Demand" a GM DON'T

They've played for 10 years a certain way, that makes for a hard habit to break. Matt has admitted as much.

Daggerheart "Description on Demand" a GM DON'T

Oh good, we've gotten to the, "My groups likes playing this way" "Well, my group likes playing this other way" part of the thread. That's great, play the way you like to play. There's hundreds of RPGs, play the ones you and your group enjoy. The problem from the OP's perspective is that advice...

Daggerheart "Description on Demand" a GM DON'T

The games don't consist of parties, but of individual PCs that wander between different groups. Not saying it's impossible, you could do it with Ten Candles if you're a masochist lol. Just saying it files off the system's strengths to fit the system to the game style.

Daggerheart "Description on Demand" a GM DON'T

Derik from Knights of Last Call is getting a lot of requests during streams for a Daggerheart "megagame" (sort of a West Marches with multiple DMs). I had the same reaction, DH isn't the right type of system for that style of game. They currently have PF2 and Dragonbane games setup like this...

Daggerheart "Description on Demand" a GM DON'T

I'd click on a video about dials. Unless it was titled, "Why DIALS are the REAL reason your games SUCK!"

Daggerheart "Description on Demand" a GM DON'T

T'was a joke. But more seriously, asking the players questions is a far cry from making them GMs. I understand if people don't like this style of playing, that's fair. But not being good at it or being uncomfortable at it means a bit of practice is all that's needed to both improve and become...

Daggerheart "Description on Demand" a GM DON'T

I tell ya, if any players companied about having to think a bit during a game, I'd turn around and answer every PC question with, "How dare you put me on the spot. Any questions I can answer with these notes in front of me?" :D

    Intentionally so, I'm sure.

Daggerheart "Description on Demand" a GM DON'T

One way I help make this less of a problem is to not make it a "Demand". When I ask a player to contribute, if they pause as though they aren't sure, I let them know that I have an idea if they don't have anything. That takes the pressure off and can help ease those in that are less comfortable...

Daggerheart "Description on Demand" a GM DON'T

To start, you don't usually do this to this level. "You walk outside. What is this planet called and what is this biome like?" is a little too top level. It's more like, "The stall owner is someone you recognize, who are they?" or "Your druid spots an interesting pink-leafed plant growing under...

Is Acquisitions Inc. switching to Daggerheart? Yes!

As some who hasn't played SD, does init work differently from dnd-style turn-based init if you ignore "always on"? Because now I'm wondering what Mike meant...

Is Acquisitions Inc. switching to Daggerheart? Yes!

Some of this is just an issue with pbps in general. I've played some "normal init" games in pbp, and waiting for the player whose turn it is comes with the format. But yeah, I can see playing pbp DH being a struggle...

Is Acquisitions Inc. switching to Daggerheart? Yes!

Oh boy, yeah, good point. Maybe doing as Derik suggests and when the spotlight goes to the players, the gm throws it to a specific player, asking how they respond to the gm move.

Shadowdark. Exploration-focused dungeon crawl game. The initiative system facilitates dungeon exploration by having each PC act during their init, even outside of combat.

Is Acquisitions Inc. switching to Daggerheart? Yes!

I'd still call it "narrative first", with some crunchy rules that don't get in the way or even help facilitate the narrative.
