Not IME. We have run lengthy, multi year campaigns with little to no predetermined setting (I know because I sleep with the enemy - aka the DM). And I don’t personally think internal consistency is vital (others may differ), it doesn’t impact my enjoyment as a player that I can think of.

Nah, you can totally have a great time playing improv as group. You don’t have to have a setting fleshed out at all really to play D&D

These two seem to be in conflict with each other. If you never tell the players anything about the game how do they figure things out?

Again, if that is your experience I think your group is doing something wrong. Common occurrences, with the correct descriptive flare, need not be boring. And it is easy enough to make hitting / dealing damage less likely too.

We will have to agree to disagree on this one. I found the pictures in the link much more interesting. They seem possibly difficult to use as dice, but much more interesting just to look at.

Not for me: 20+ years in I still enjoy hitting more than missing!

As a player I find rolling damage much more rewarding than missing.

We do it a little different. We let HP work as intended, and the to-hit chance reflects that. However, at +10 is when you get a critical and that is the actual dangerous hit. That takes off of bloodied hit points, which you have much much less of. And it is still fantastic!

I’m guessing you don’t play with new players often (which the OP is taking about). IME, new players take forever to learn what spells do and to pick the spell they want to use. In our game with 4 out of 5 PCs adding weapon masteries we didn’t notice much change in game speed, but we are not new...

I like the blue quite a bit, but miss the ears. I will say the concept art in the digital dragon book is better than most of what I have seen elsewhere.
