    Thread block

This seems reasonably likely to me. It's also an excellent example of why I'm not a fan of two-way blocking, but I assume that's a decision that isn't going to be reassessed by the administration any time soon, so it is what it is. Edit: Looking at the settings, it looks like it's possible to...

What makes setting lore "actually matter" to the players?

Fair enough. Although, keep in mind that you can also get your existing players to do recruiting for you. About half of my current group was brought in by other members of the group. I'm aware that I've got it pretty good and sometimes I fail to appreciate that getting a good group together can...

What makes setting lore "actually matter" to the players?

I don't really know you, but you seem to me to be the sort of person who's able to recruit entirely new players into the hobby. It's what I do, and it ensures my preferences will exist in sufficient quantities that I can continue to run my games my way for as long as I wish.

    Thread block

Yeah, I'm all good with people choosing to block anyone they want for any reason they want, but it's very unfortunate that the board settings mean it completely derails an entire, ongoing thread. Especially since, in this case, the OP wasn't even all that involved with the discussion.

    Thread block

I too am locked out, but the thread is still there if I'm logged out, so I presume it is a multi-poster-blocking event. Quite strange, as the whole thing seemed quite civil to me, and I haven't been actively involved with much of anything else recently.

    Player skill vs character skill?

Yes, that's a fair point. Instead of time pressure, it would be farier to say, resource pressure with time being one possible resource.

    Player skill vs character skill?

In this context, no meaningful consequence of failure is being taken as, "no meaningful difference between success and failure". I roll to walk across the room. If success means, "I walk across the room" and failure means, "I walk across the room, but slightly less gracefully," then, in most...

    Player skill vs character skill?

No one's saying roll if the situation can't change. The dispute is whether to roll when change isnt guaranteed. Everyone in this thread requires at least that success or failure has a meaningful consequence. Some expect that both success and failure have distinct and meaningful consequences...

    Player skill vs character skill?

I partially disagree with the conclusion regarding metagaming, but not sufficiently so that I feel motivated enough to argue about it. Otherwise, yes, I think it's pretty spot on. Overall, I don't think it's surprising you and I agree. I've agreed with pretty much everything you've said in...

    Player skill vs character skill?

To be clear, I'm not trying to convince you of anything. If what you're doing works for you, it works for you -- it just happens to be fundamentally at odds with the whole way I approach most games (and, as noted earlier, rolling dice too often is definitely not a thing that tends to happen in...

    Player skill vs character skill?

Whereas I'm typically fine with status quo as a possible outcome. Sometimes, "no, you're not able to pick this lock at this time, try something else or find a way to change the situation in your favour" is an outcome that makes sense in the context of the fictional world, and I don't have a need...

    Player skill vs character skill?

I'm just pointing out that I've seen advocates for and participated personally in this playstyle outside of the OSR (including much more recently than 22 years ago on both counts), and now you have have seen it show up outside the OSR as well. Also, you very much did say it's not...

    Player skill vs character skill?

I developed this style of play because I grew up running Rolemaster, where any given roll has a chance of disaster. This naturally guided me towards running those games in a way in which rolls weren't called for excessively, despite the fact it is a skill-based system. As far back as the...

What rpg system would you use for a 60+ session fantasy campaign?

I always check, but that's because I know that I generally need to avoid throwing opinions around in 5e threads. For someone who is here for D&D, and especially 5e, I suspect it's very easy to overlook the fact that any other sort of discussion happens.

What rpg system would you use for a 60+ session fantasy campaign?

I am (pleasantly) surprised by the amount of love for RM going on in this thread. Even if RMU specifically is of no interest to me, I'm happy to see it introducing people to the wider RM fold. I'm currently seven sessions into the first game I've ever run in the Forgotten Realms (with any...

What makes setting lore "actually matter" to the players?

If they're in a game with dozens of class and race options, then they're most likely there for people who want dozens of class and race options and they matter to those people simply by dint of their existence. If you want a detailed avian race with a unique culture, then you're looking at...

What makes setting lore "actually matter" to the players?

A lot of this conversation seems to be begging the question, to me. If I like a setting, if I'm inspired to run a game in that setting, then I will do so. If I, as a GM, count as a player for the purposes of this discussion, then I can't really answer the question with anything more than saying...

    Player skill vs character skill?

It sounds like when you say "D&D" you mean 5e, Pathfinder and similar games, where choosing and using specific feats and abilities is a key component (hence my feeling that you were referring to games with a strong charop element). As this is a thread in the TTRPG General forum, I assume D&D...

    Player skill vs character skill?

There's a presumption that, if you're at my table, you're "a bit interested" in planning, problem solving, lateral thinking and the like. Probably a lot more than you're interested in "building combos" and "maximising actions", and I don't think it should be taken as read that if you're...
