Level Up (A5E) How to reach 20th Level in 45 days — An analysis of "adventuring day" per character level

Yes exactly! We know that the numbers are lower, but it is unclear to me why they are lower. Or really, SO MUCH LOWER. Like "mega dungeons aren't possible past level 11 in 5e because a character-level's worth of encounters does not begin to sufficiently challenge the party's daily resources"...

Level Up (A5E) How to reach 20th Level in 45 days — An analysis of "adventuring day" per character level

For anybody who doesn't know: In D&D 3.5, the number of standard encounters per level was 13.3. Every single level. In D&D 4e, the number of standard encounters per level was 10. Every single level.

Level Up (A5E) How to reach 20th Level in 45 days — An analysis of "adventuring day" per character level

Yes, I think that's an incredibly good point! And I don't think it's fuzzy at all, I think it's immediately relevant. Because just like I wanted to make a campaign calendar, folks may also be interested in how long it would take in real life time to cover certain story arcs. Raise your hand if...

Level Up (A5E) How to reach 20th Level in 45 days — An analysis of "adventuring day" per character level

This is insightful, thank you! That's a good point, and I agree that it's a weak point of the "milestone" system. In 4e I relied on XP because I was using quests as a way of helping keep players on track, Purple Cards to help the players get creative, and I was having problems with attendance /...

Level Up (A5E) How to reach 20th Level in 45 days — An analysis of "adventuring day" per character level

That said, the appropriate challenges named in the A5e books are not the ones expected by 05e. Combine inconsistent O5e monster math with a "we liked how these numbers looked" XP system, and it makes sense you'd end up with something like this. So part of the problem we might be seeing with the...

Level Up (A5E) How to reach 20th Level in 45 days — An analysis of "adventuring day" per character level

@lichmaster I think this is a sensible response to the tables I presented. (I would personally describe my analysis as "descriptive" as opposed to "prescriptive," but your point is well taken.) I personally find some of the results of my analysis pretty unsatisfactory, the sense that a single...

Level Up (A5E) How to reach 20th Level in 45 days — An analysis of "adventuring day" per character level

I miss the days in 4e where you could curate an entire dungeon with the rote mathematical guidelines that no matter the character level, X encounters yielded 1 character level. So I've very often wondered about how a similar system would work for 5e/A5e, and the fact that we now can design...

Level Up (A5E) Making Monsters Matter - Ecological Analysis

I'm not very far into uploading my creature notes to Obsidian.md yet, but I am starting to see some very exciting emergence just in the way you describe. For example, cambions and doppelgangers are both shapeshifters. Cambions in particular love to corrupt the nobility and other figures of...

Level Up (A5E) Making Monsters Matter - Ecological Analysis

The encounter tables in the A5e books are not just good, they're amazing. Besides being able to generate random encounters appropriate for your environment and level (making overland travel quite nice), the tables mix a combination of encounters from all three pillars. Even individual monsters...

D&D General "Greater Invisibility lets you ignore gravity" --- Experiments with DnD and AI

So I write stuff for EN Publishing's 3PP DnD stuff, so when news these days about AI being able to help you write articles wholesale and the (disturbing but probably not true) rumors of a sentient AI at Google have me wondering about the applications of AI in RPG writing. Today I made my first...
