RPG Evolution: The AI DM in Action

I feel like this is a good moment to say that there are a lot of high quality pro DMs on startplaying.games, including myself. If you want to fight the AI takeover of our hobby AND play more, it might be worth looking into.

I picked this up without even finishing the review---no regrets! This is a fabulous resource. I only wish I could get a physical print version!

    D&D 5E (2024) Here's The New 2024 Player's Handbook Wizard Art

TY, and I agree. Still, at what level does a wizard learn to wield their gear telekinetically? A power this cool, useful, and represented by the art shouldn't just be flavor. (WotC, you can send me my designer fee later! :D )

    D&D 5E (2024) Here's The New 2024 Player's Handbook Wizard Art

I love the design and the art is wonderful. But it strikes me as very "Overwatch." I would enjoy it as a MTG planeswalker card.

WotC Vecna Eve of Ruin: Everything You Need To Know

I like the idea of 32 distinct dungeons! I wonder, just from a math perspective, how they will be able to keep these dungeons challenging while both prevent the players from over-leveling and keeping the XP rules as they are.

WotC Vecna Eve of Ruin: Everything You Need To Know

Am I hearing right that this campaign is supposed to last about 8 sessions? Between the content being "like" 7 mini-adventures and 5e XP math existing the way it does, it is hard for me to imagine it being any other way. If that is a correct assumption, that maths to each plane/character level...

Level Up (A5E) How to reach 20th Level in 45 days — An analysis of "adventuring day" per character level

My educated guess: 7 pieces of the rod, each requires 1 game session / level to find. At 20th level, Vecna encountered after a long rest because there is no reason not to. Everyone goes nuclear because there is no reason not to. Downed in 3 rounds or less because 20th level isn't the sweet spot...

Level Up (A5E) How to reach 20th Level in 45 days — An analysis of "adventuring day" per character level

4e's approach in this reguard I think is the best. 10 standard encounters per level, with lots of room for modularly customizing what "10" and "standard" means. For example, you can replace standard monsters (1:1 with PCs of their level) with minions with a ratio of 1:5 (easy to remember at...

    Voidrunner Voidrunner playtest character

A little surprised by the inspiration feature. I guess +1d4 on an opposed check can come in clutch at the right time, particularly if you already have advantage. But most of the time I would just take the advantage. [edit] Also, a little surprising to see Inexorable Concentration here! (But I...

Level Up (A5E) You don't hate exploration, you hate survival

This thread exists to be helpful to more people than those as enlightened as yourself, including those [edit] mainly familiar with 5e/A5E as presented.

Level Up (A5E) How to reach 20th Level in 45 days — An analysis of "adventuring day" per character level

It is much what I predicted as well. Unfortunately, it doesn't do anything to address the other, more primary issue: how to appropriately challenge high-level characters in a meaningful way. It clearly isn't resource management or a dungeon.

Level Up (A5E) How to reach 20th Level in 45 days — An analysis of "adventuring day" per character level

[edited] I agree with your assessment, but the implications are utterly bizzare. It is as thought to say that 5e is such a good game, you should spend a minimal ammount of time playing it! There was a sentiment common to A5e designers that 5e seemed practically unplaytested, and this...

Level Up (A5E) You don't hate exploration, you hate survival

I hope you can see how that inheres a non-normative perspective. [edit] And how the point by @PJ Coffey inheres the normative perspective as expressed by 5e's designers, that killing monsters is how you get XP.

Level Up (A5E) You don't hate exploration, you hate survival

I thought you were saying that it was in 5e somewhere. [edit] So I feel like the point by @FrogReaver about guidance for those rules in 5e still applies. And for some reason when I heard the phrase "didn't dissapear in 2e," I thought you meant that it was preprinted and accomodated for 5e...

Level Up (A5E) You don't hate exploration, you hate survival

I can agree with rewarding players only for straying on track with the setting, but I am somewhat surprised to hear the implication that Experience Points is a less gamist concept than checks notes awarding power-ups every few sessions.
