TSR On the Relative Merits of the TSR Editions

I suppose, but if you want a character with lots of mechanical widgets (which apparently isn't a deal breaker for a lot of gamers, judging from the popularity of modern D&D and its relatives), then character creation is just going to take a little more time. If you're worried about getting a new...

    Shadowdark Shadowdark General Thread [+]

As I said, I don't see the systems being so different that you can't just make any needed conversions, thus preserving the flavor.

    Shadowdark Shadowdark General Thread [+]

Maybe so, but is the setting really so different that any needed conversion can't be handled by the GM?

    Are You A GM?

I've been the GM more often than not (and prefer it that way) since 2018, but before that was a round-robin situation in my old group. Nowadays I'm happy to sit behind the screen unless someone in the group gets a wild hair.

TSR On the Relative Merits of the TSR Editions

I've never understood the problem with taking more time to make a character. That's a big part of what session zero is for, after all. Take all the time you need I say.

D&D General [+] More Robust 'Fantasy Race' Mechanics for D&D-alikes / Redeeming 'Race as Class' for Modern D&D [+]

That sounds like reflavoring. I know this is a good solution for many people, but I have never been in favor of it. For me, if you are simulating different things they should be represented differently in the rules.

Who Should Gal Gadot Play In The New DCU?

Are they rebooting the DCCU then? I hadn't heard that, but I'm not surprised. It hasn't been as successful at the end of the day as they'd hoped, and full continuity reboots are still all the rage in the DCU(s).

Worlds of Design: Story vs. Gameplay

Yup. I definitely don't want the mechanics to push any more story than that. That's up to the players and how they choose to interact with the setting through their PCs IMO.

Trust me, I wish I remembered far more important things than this instead.

TSR On the Relative Merits of the TSR Editions

The second printing 1e books had the orange spines, not 2e. 2e first printing was black spines with blue line art, and the second printing was also black spines and had red line art and headers.

Modules: Made to Read vs Made to Run?

Like what? I want a personally owned format that does not require or usually lead to requiring an internet connection or a subscription. I prefer it to resemble the print version it is designed to represent and/replace. And I want it to be accessible on my PC or Kindle and easy to store and...

Modules: Made to Read vs Made to Run?

You are welcome to feel that way, but that doesn't mean what you think is beyond debate. Like I said, pdfs do exactly what I want for digital media in a practical way that actually works with existing systems and network owners. I can't see your opinion as anything more than personal taste.

Oh yes. Certainly the best monster book. Everything I like better in any way came from another company.

Yup. I'm happy to still have my 2e original core.

TSR On the Relative Merits of the TSR Editions

I always saw them as a way to "hack" 2e to make it play the way you want. Too complex for me and my group at the time, but my taste in complexity and simulation has grown in recent years, and the Player's Option stuff is IMO worth another look.

Are sales really the important thing to take away from this discussion?

TSR On the Relative Merits of the TSR Editions

I and my original group(s) played with 1e as our core rules from 1988 to 2000, and again from 2002 to 2009, and again from 2010 to 2014. Our experiments with WotC editions never lasted more than a year or two until 5e was released. Even after that, we occasionally ran 1e until my best friend...

Modules: Made to Read vs Made to Run?

The two sides do seem pretty diametrically opposed. I know some have suggested otherwise, but personally I find it hard to believe that, for any given product, it doesn't have to be one way or the other. And if what one side wants actively harms what the other wants, conflict is likely.

Modules: Made to Read vs Made to Run?

Keep in mind this thread is not specifically about how great the kind of presentation of information you prefer is. It's a discussion of the two primary philosophies of adventure-writing. The topic invites differing points of view. Not really sigh-worthy IMO.
