D&D General Why do people like Alignment?

It is just a different way to set up the game and narrative control of things. I have played in shared world D&D games where the DM shifted and we riffed on ideas and setting elements others had introduced as well as our own. As a DM I have incorporated things players have introduced for stuff...

TSR Why would anyone want to play 1e?

Can you say where a 1e 1d4 is stated? The MM says d6, and the DMG I found the mercenaries as 0 level with d4+3. I vaguely remember d4 for peasants but can't find the reference right now.

D&D General Why do people like Alignment?

I think there is a qualitative difference in the DM player relationship based on the alignment mechanics. In OD&D to 3e for example the paladin mechanics had the DM review whether the paladin made a prohibited alignment action (chaotic act for OD&D, evil acts for the other editions) or not and...

D&D General The Player's Quantum Ogre: Warlock Pacts

So the 9th level contact patron thing is new to the 24 warlock, it was not part of being a warlock in the 14 PH. It gives a contact other plane once a day to their patron with an auto successful save and they always have the spell prepared. Level 9: Contact Patron In the past, you usually...

TSR Why would anyone want to play 1e?

1e MM Men entry page 66: "Normal men have from 1-6 hit points each." There are non-normal men with different HD entries on page 67: bersekers have 2-7 hp, cavemen have 2 normal d8 HD, and tribesmen have 1 normal d8 HD. 1e DMG page 30: "Note that regular soldiers are 0 level men-at-arms with...

D&D General Why do we color-code Dragons?

I did that for a 5e one shot, though I had never heard that a WotC designer did so as well. I was riffing on a friend’s story from back in 1e but who had done something similar with an albino red.

D&D General Why do we color-code Dragons?

I was thinking more that blues can work most anywhere, desert, sea coastline, mountains, whatever. Others like whites and greens have less options for predator camouflage.

D&D General Why do we color-code Dragons?

I always thought of blue as blending in with the sky.

D&D General Why do we color-code Dragons?

In world the explanation is often The Chromatic Dragon Tiamat as mother of evil dragons.

In a fantasy world filled with magic and miraculous beings, will the religious concepts of the locals be completely different from the human of Earth?

So when you said that "the net effect would be that people would participate in the rituals with even more enthusiasm." the people you were talking about is limited to only high level clerics and not other people? I can see D&D cleric spells as priestly rituals, but not really sacrifices, most...

D&D General I'm a Fighter, not a Lover: Why the 1e Fighter was so Awesome

The best for the thief/assassin cover story is he would always say he would check for traps, I would roll and say "You don't find any." and he would then have the party ranger who had the most hit points open up the door or chest or whatever "just in case."

D&D General I'm a Fighter, not a Lover: Why the 1e Fighter was so Awesome

Not always. In my long term 1e campaign my brother and a friend played wild elf assassins and convinced everybody they were thieves for a couple levels, even though neither of them had any thief skills until third level and my brother was running around with a trident and shield from the start...

D&D General I'm a Fighter, not a Lover: Why the 1e Fighter was so Awesome

One big fighter advantage is that most other classes were not combat balanced against them. In original OD&D the three classes seemed decently combat balanced, the Fighting Man was tough, had great defense and decent offense including the ability to use powerful magic swords. Magic Users were...

D&D General I'm a Fighter, not a Lover: Why the 1e Fighter was so Awesome

But every 1e Monster and god entry has those psionics lines. Which are just taking up extra space since there are already monster stat lines for special attacks and defenses where this could come in.

D&D General The Player's Quantum Ogre: Warlock Pacts

It does not have to be a bad faith thing. I have two friends who I consider great DMs who I really do not ever want to play a cleric or warlock in their games (and paladin in one of them) because what they consider the cool parts of the classes (specific ways to handle the god/patron...
