TSR Why would anyone WANT to play 1e?

I don't think that was quite it, I think for D&D they just wanted it to be more fantasical. They included a bunch of real world diseases in d20 Modern right in the core book and in the d20 Modern SRD so it was there to be used in gaming and it was easy to add into D&D if you wanted.

TSR Why would anyone WANT to play 1e?

I wouldn't say tons. I ran a lot of modules and played in a bunch of one shots and campaigns, healing potions always felt like emergency stuff, not common use. It was rare for a PC to have more than one and usually none. The Moathouse in the Temple of Elemental Evil for example has a total of...

D&D General Why do people like Alignment?

D&D alignment comes from its use in both Anderson and Moorcock. :)

TSR Why would anyone WANT to play 1e?

I think this varied significantly group to group. I never had henchmen in the 1e or Basic games I played in or ran. Every 1e and Basic adventure was just the party. I DM'd B1 in Search of Adventure and the Moathouse in the Temple of Elemental Evil and there was not a single henchman as they...

TSR Why would anyone WANT to play 1e?

The multiple saves have their own logic for groupings but they are not as explicit as the 3e/4e three saves/defenses. 1e has: Paralyzation, Poison, or Death Magic - mostly are you lucky/favored of the gods as these saves are did it get you or not as opposed to resisting them after being...

TSR Why would anyone WANT to play 1e?

Whether or not you got bonus money for landing on Go would vary and just be the way your group did it, not cheating if it was not the official way. Whether or not when you choose not to buy a property that you landed on it opens it up to an auction for all players. That sort of stuff varied and...

TSR Why would anyone WANT to play 1e?

80s D&D was always the DM sets the rules and has a lot of discretion in what to apply and how to handle things. So as a player you just go with whatever the DM says and it could vary DM to DM. One DM just roleplays NPC interactions while another rolls on a reaction chart which is modified by PC...

    Undead Origins

Dead Things: The RPG Microlite20 Zombie: Most zombie literature says that being bitten by a zombie turns you into a zombie, I agree. However that thinking leads to short character lives. So here is how we do it in Dead Things. Zombie attacks are all considered scratches and abrasions except for...

    D&D General Mythos in D&D

I played in a game where we had to consult with a not adversarial NPC oracle type warlock of the Old Ones and the madness was played up quite enthusiastically and was fairly creepy. It was the opposite of Clint's situation, it was not appropriate to just kill him but we could see how wrong he was.

    Dragon Reflections #95

Red Nails! Where he poisons, then kills a carnivorous stegosaurus. "It must be as big as an elephant,"muttered Conan, echoing her thought. "What the devil——" His voice trailed away in stunned silence. Through the thicket was thrust a head of nightmare and lunacy. Grinning jaws bared rows of...

    D&D General Mythos in D&D

I also remember doing things like having a serpentfolk cultist complete a ritual summoning when the party uncovered their lair and giving a mythos style description to giant amoebas the Pathfinder Bestiary 2 which was a nice flavor change from enemy clerics summoning things like fiendish wolves.

    D&D General Mythos in D&D

I have used gods from the Cerulean Seas Campaign Setting which include some variants of Cthulhu along with using some mythos cult information from the statless Cults of Freeport sourcebook.

    D&D General Mythos in D&D

I have run modules that used Yig and Hastur as entities, serpentfolk cultist sorcerers of Yig and Hastur, a plot involving the Great Race of Yith, and a module of a lost city that ended when half the party died after they uncovered a Shoggoth (the other half fled).

    D&D General Mythos in D&D

With a few more days left on the Cosmic Horror sale I was wondering to what extent people have used Cthulhu mythos stuff in their D&D games. 1e Deities and Demigods in its first printings had the Melnibonean and Lovecraftian mythos pantheons and Pathfinder 1e has a bunch of mythos creatures...
