6! Each domain has 3 L1 cards and you can choose between them (edit: unless you were specifically pointing at “spells”). Dont forget that the Instinct ranged weapons are basically damage cantrips too and you should totally flavor them as energy blasts from wands or staves or whatever. Also...

What gets me playing Draw Steel and not Pathfinder 2e?

There’s an additional layer of “how is the game feel that results from the mechanics.” Eg: what does the actual fiction that surrounds those turn by turn actions look and sound like.

Improvised an entire metaphysical "Oghma's Test of Mental and Physical Strength" off the cuff tonight, using nested Montages to resolve as a scene-framed dungeon, pulling memories out of character's minds ("Raka, tell us about the last time you felt true mortal fear?") to then play out in a new...

DS! only has 10 levels, unlike 4e's 30. Based on my experience so far and the general guidelines in the book you should expect 3-5 Victories per session of 3-4 hours. Extending that out and if you read the various ways the book suggests awarding victories beyond combat encounters, I can see a...

There’s explicit secondary weapons, but generally they just give you the listed Feature benefit (a shield gives you extra armor slots, a short sword gives you +2 bonus damage to your main hand, etc). When you make an attack roll, it’s with a single weapon unless you have a domain or class...

    Player skill vs character skill?

Also, if you have actual new players there’a a host of “teach the paradigm” content out there these days! Shadowdark even does this right in the player facing material and further in its free dungeon.

    Player skill vs character skill?

Most of the time when I see "player skill" highlighted its in terms of "use your knowledge of tropes and conventions and procedures to achieve success" with the idea that this in part stands in for what a skilled adventurer would know operating in a world built on this sort of assumptions. This...

    Should traps have tells?

I think that if you're playing a game in which a significant goal of play is the back and forth of investigating a dungeon using conversational modes between the players declaring actions and the DM responding with a clear hierarchy of Landmark -> Hidden -> Secret knowledge, you must have Tells...

There's not really such a thing as a "multi-attack" apart from a handful of abilities. as you note, an attack is a single Action Roll so you always have the chance to flip the spotlight. You only make one Action Roll at a time, check the result, and if it's a Success with Hope the players side...

I’m taking Codex and making it into a tech-priest domain. If we don’t need to worry about “wizard as Swiss Army knife” I think that sort of theme fits a tech tinker better.

The Homebrew kit tells you what the values are, if you're talking about the Evasion/HP mix. Generally, sum to 16; Codex gets 5 and Valor gets 7. If you're talking about something else, the Kit probably has some design thoughts about that too haha.

The domains don't really map to Classes and Subclasses directly, in fact the Homebrew Kit says to avoid making direct references to class in a Domain you design so it can be shared. There's an intent for the Hope + Core features to speak directly to a specific fantasy, and then the subclasses...

Daggerheart To Release Official Hope & Fear Expansion

I'm planning an Assassin class for my 40k hack that will be a version of Midnight + Bone, with a Bladedancer and either sniper or poisoner subclass (I don't hate the poisons idea, but the execution is lacking).

    Daggerheart General Thread [+]

Yeah, so I'm doing a pretty big rework of the classes and domains for my 40k hack. I think that Frame-style "consider this" for the classes only goes so far when you're getting into a style of flavor that deviates strongly from the core domain and class vibe. I think you can get a long way with...

Daggerheart To Release Official Hope & Fear Expansion

Yup! Really surprised it wasn't what was used, I don't really think of "melee brawler" when I think assassin, and stuff like Boost and Strategic Approach feel very assassin/rogueish. Honestly I keep forgetting Rogue is Shadow + Grace because I just assumed it was Bone, lol.

Daggerheart To Release Official Hope & Fear Expansion

I wonder if they're saving the final refinement pass for the published content. I was actually just reviewing the Assassin today for a hack I'm making and also noticed that it's generally underwhelming in the playtest compared to the Rogue for instance.

Best practices for easy-to-run modules [+]

If you conceal a trap with magic, the presence of magic is a tell. If you build a trap into the environment, it has some sort of clue that it's there for those with experience with traps who take time and energy to look. Ideally, some nod towards those tells is present in the Landmark ->...

    Secrets of low-prep homebrew [+]

So here's some ways I've done that in a highly narrative focused game like Blades in the Dark: Center on a goal of play through some around the table questions. In something like Blades, you've got Scores and their Targets to facilitate that. Ask each character how they want to gather...

Are you going to keep the names and descriptions, or re work them to be a little more mutation related? You could probably trim down to d12 instead if you wanted, and certain of the ancestries don't really work without the surrounding bits (Fungril, Clank, stuff like Luckbringer, Celestial Trance).

    D&D 5E (2024) WotC Should Make 5.5E Specific Setting

I was just pointing out a different product to grab if he didn’t want the adventure! They do have different maps between them for the settlements and stuff though, worth considering which style you want.
