    Spoilers Daredevil: Born Again (Spoilers)

Note that a police SUV rolls up in the background right as White Tiger gets shot. Given that we have deliberately been shown two dirty cops with the Punisher tattoo (modified with a backwards American-ish flag), we are likely meant to wonder how the Punisher fits in, but ultimately conclude it’s...

D&D 5E (2024) Life drain needs to be replaced with Exhaustion

I’d personally reserve it for a boss. Save the super-scary tool for the right moment. Especially if that boss is the Wraith King and uses hit-and-run tactics. (And traditionally kills a PC every time he shows up.)

D&D 5E (2024) Life drain needs to be replaced with Exhaustion

It’s certainly a much more lethal approach, and not just for that reason; the death spiral to combat effectiveness would also be very pronounced. Each level would mean a cumulative -2 to all attacks, saves, checks and a cumulative -5 penalty to speed (making escape all the more unlikely)...

D&D 5E (2024) Oil of Sharpness creates permanent +3 magic weapons?

I had an awakened tree with a face that would eat magic items that were fed to it and spit out other, requested items of the same rarity.

Warhammer Fantasy The Old World RPG (TOW) is not WFRP Revised

Yes. I loved the system (particularly the character generation and the streamlined approach to GMing), but was upset with the new direction for Dragonlance (including the novels). I believe there was a Marvel game that used the SAGA rules, too, but never got a chance to try it.

D&D 5E (2024) Paladins can Smite on Ranged attacks (with thrown melee weapons) now!

Except Darts, which are simple ranged weapons. Note that the description of the thrown property differentiates between melee weapons with the thrown property and weapons with the thrown property that are not melee weapons. Per the PHB: “If a weapon has the Thrown property, you can throw the...

They did that with Dragonlance. It was a pretty good system, though.

    D&D 5E (2024) Thoughts on Stealth and D&D2024

From the PHB Rules Glossary: ““You.” The game’s rules—in this glossary and elsewhere—often talk about something happening to you in the game world. That “you” refers to the creature or object that the rule applies to in a particular moment of play. For example, the “you” in the Prone condition...

    D&D 5E (2024) Thoughts on Stealth and D&D2024

The first paragraph doesn’t mention players at all. It says that the characters can try to make the check. And the second paragraph clarifies that the DM can choose to keep that check secret from the players by using their characters’ Passive Perception score for the check.

Hot take: get rid of the "balanced party" paradigm

To be fair, I think the “horror story-ness” of some of those threads is overstated, sometimes greatly.

Hot take: get rid of the "balanced party" paradigm

Actually, my first instinct while reading your OP was to ask if you included level disparity in your consideration of enforced balance, but someone else got there first. So, less of a tangent to my mind than yours, I guess.

Hot take: get rid of the "balanced party" paradigm

Oh, I’ve certainly met some who have never improved. I just think that making mistakes (even big ones that would rival a “GM horror story” in some reddit thread) is inevitable in GMing over any extended length of time. Because part of GMing is experimenting. My use of the term, “bad,” is an...

Hot take: get rid of the "balanced party" paradigm

In theory, 5e should be able to handle parties of mixed level better than 3e or 4e could because of bounded accuracy. In practice, the high-scaling of damage and hp makes this exceptionally difficult, especially at differing tiers. Something like Dungeon World handles it just fine, however.

Hot take: get rid of the "balanced party" paradigm

I’ve never met a good GM who wasn’t a bad GM first, though. Myself included. It is a learned skill/art and it takes practice to find out what works both in general and for each group. Mistakes are an important part of the process.

    D&D 5E (2014) Handling Morale Checks

Makes sense (that they chose Wisdom) if you consider that 5e assumes Wisdom is the stat that resists fear effects. Personally, I’d think it would be better represented with an independent stat (“Valor” or somesuch), but…eh. Well, DM discretion is the default when it comes to monster morale.

Wizards of the Coast Is Hiring a D&D Worldbuilder

I think he was going to with Green Ronin (bought the rights). Not sure it ever happened, though. I think the stunt system might have evolved into the AGE stunts.

Wizards of the Coast Is Hiring a D&D Worldbuilder

Sure. Fundamentally 2e (even with kits). Some things that would end up in 3e (like feats, I think? Maybe?). But (once I get past the fact that it is roll-under) Alternity’s core mechanic of d20 +/- a die type seems similar (to me) to the way (some of) Dragon Fist’s stunts modify rolls. That...

Wizards of the Coast Is Hiring a D&D Worldbuilder

My recollection is that Dragon Fist was before 3e released. And I’m certain it didn’t use the D20 System. Don’t remember the specifics, but I feel like it was closer to Alternity in mechanics? Something about different die-types for stunts, maybe? [Edited to capitalize “System” for clarity.]

    D&D 5E (2014) Handling Morale Checks

I think, were I looking to implement a house-ruled morale system, I’d want something simple that encourages proactive attempts to break morale and can also negatively affect PCs without removing their agency.

    IRON DM 2023 Tournament Thread

Congratulations to @Snarf Zagyg for a solid win. Very compelling read! And thanks to @Gradine for judging and organizing this thing. It’s a lot more work than most assume.
