    Failing Forward

This presumes that the DM's expectations become set as a "Success / Failure" standard. If however the conflicts are established an valid and fun resolutions are possible regardless of what the players do with their (potentially asymmetrical) knowledge then a lot of doors are opened. I would...

I think this is very good. I'd tend to call myself a fairly "hardcore simulationist", but to me the joy of the experience when that hardcore simulation baseline crashed into the player's ideas (and luck) with wildly unexpected results. Maybe that disqualifies me from your definition, but I...

I don't think anyone would dispute that the idea of level appropriate challenges has always been around in one form or another. Certainly in 3E and PF, for which I make no secret of my admiration, CR and EL are front and center. So it would be really stupid to argue that. But you are very much...

    D&D 5E (2014) So, 5e OGL

Ok, you presented it as ambiguous and debatable where the line between value added and value lost could be found. We have resolved this that it is clearly a strongly net positive. Hurray.

I'm going to skip the massive change of subject. False. You said: "You wouldn't send first level PCs to 200 foot cliff land any more than you'd send them to the Demonweb Pits or to the lairs of elder dragons." Read more...

Or option D, which has been discussed and ignored forever. I get accused of "edition warring" and baited with false arguments which can only be rebutted by rehashing edition wars. You are missing the point. This was true for a lot of people throughout the 4E era and claims that opposition was...

    D&D 5E (2014) So, 5e OGL

Cool, I'm glad we agree. The context of your original comment was making the case to Mark that there were "lost sales". http://www.enworld.org/forum/showthread.php?355286-So-5e-OGL/page144&p=6799728&viewfull=1#post6799728 Now you are agreeing that maybe there were no "lost sales". If you had...

    Failing Forward

You are "winning" a battle that is not being fought. All I'm saying is that *IS* an example of what I claimed and was told I was wrong for claiming. The deeper issues with the distinctions of 4E's approach have been debated to death (somewhat literally). The concept of "CR" and EL are part of...

    D&D 5E (2014) So, 5e OGL

I believe this to be the weak point in your position. If 10 potential players hear of PF because of the popularity which is driven by the free support, and 2 of them buy it, then you have gone from 0 out of 0 to 2 out of 10. That is +2 and it isn't reasonable to take a person who was never...

    D&D 5E (2014) So, 5e OGL

This does not answer my question at all. Your statement could be completely wrong or it could perfectly define the foundation of PF's success. It still doesn't answer the question I asked.

I'm not looking to rehash the battle. I'm simply pointing out that this is a perfect example of what I was talking about at the time.

    D&D 5E (2014) So, 5e OGL

Do you think the existence of the PFSRD may have led to games that in turn lead to people buying the core book? There is a Neil Gaiman short essay on piracy somewhere out there. He said that a lot of his stuff was pirated in Russia (??) and then his sales went up nicely there. The point is not...

I was asserting that the height of the cliff would be based on the level of the PCs, exactly as you described here. We could argue wording all day, but I was asserting what you said here. You have advocated here the EXACT thing that I was bothered by. I think you are simply playing word games...

    Failing Forward

If I may threadjack for a moment, Not long ago I was given quite a hard time for claiming that this approach was common and endorsed by the 4E approach. [/threadjack] On topic, this point ties closely to the debate at hand. I think there are larger issues than how to handle bad rolls which...

    D&D 5E (2014) Expected Additions to SRD 1.2

Agree completely. I don't think we will see anything like the 3E era BOOM, but it will be a solid, steady "evergreen" thing. And you are exactly right, WotC knows what they are getting into. It isn't *ALL* good, but the net package is still great.

    D&D 5E (2014) Expected Additions to SRD 1.2

Pretty much the D20 STL of 3E reimagined for today. That went well for a while. But once people realized that they could completely ignore it, it stopped being a motivator. I predict that everything will be a lot more even keeled this time. And the actual "D&D" storefront is a much nicer...

5e combat system too simple / boring?

Yep This was a both a strength and a flaw in 4e, depending on the group and circumstances

    D&D 5E (2014) Expected Additions to SRD 1.2

Yeah, and I'm onboard with your position. Though with the caveat that since you can't truly close the content, closign the names seems odd. But I also don't want to come across as negative. This is all great news. WotC are the good guys here. But their good will and intent may be one thing...

    D&D 5E (2014) Expected Additions to SRD 1.2

Under Sorcerous Origin it lists "Wild Magic", so it seems that clearly allows you to reference it. Without getting into the murky "play nice" issues, you can easily reconstruct anything that is missing, so long as you work around names which are not available. I think you could produce a...
