D&D 5E (2014) Common sense isn't so common and the need for tolerance

Now you're saying that each time I have a player roll I need to be looking at their modifiers and using those to set the DC. I don't understand how you don't get that that is cumbersome... and indicative of a cumbersome system. Sure... but the number is under 2000 archers, which is hardly...

D&D 5E (2014) Common sense isn't so common and the need for tolerance

Right... but if it's 5% and there's a penalty for failure, why would I want to rule that possibility out through fiat? Why is the skill system failing to support normal ranges of numbers? Except the peasant's arrow only hits the dragon through a special "20s always succeed" rule that doesn't...

D&D 5E (2014) Common sense isn't so common and the need for tolerance

It might be if that was the chance of success for Joe average. Or an apprentice. Or even a typical trained professional. But that's actually the chance of success for only 3 character classes in the game, in their double-specialties, for the most naturally talented individuals of specific races...

    D&D 5E (2014) How does one "Champion"?

I highly suggest the fighter guide from the 'guides' thread on this very forum: http://www.enworld.org/forum/showthread.php?468964-GUIDE-The-Art-of-War-A-Fighter-Guide&p=6705448#post6705448 Pay special attention to it's section titled "On optimization". In a nutshell: don't fret it. As long as...

D&D 5E (2014) Common sense isn't so common and the need for tolerance

Right... but it's usually pretty easy to work out what skills apply. The only difference this really makes is whether the player talks the DM around to a different skill being used, or whether the DM just randomly made things much harder because he didn't decide on an applicable skill and the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Whip Feat

Fair, but boring. ie - you can make a shove attack to prone a target with weird mechanics. This basically just makes the game more complex, since now there's twice as many rules governing the exact same outcome. Oh, except now you can dump strength, since this can be dex-based. Note that...

Unearthed Arcana Unearthed Arcana October 2017: Fiendish Options

It feels like you could just have a planetouched race that was "darkvision, +2 to a stat, +1 to another stat, pick an elemental resistance, choose a cantrip at 1st, a 2nd level spell at 3rd and another one at 5th", rather than iterating out all the possibilities... I quite like the idea of the...

D&D 5E (2014) Common sense isn't so common and the need for tolerance

The problem arises when the DM thinks "This is an action that should have a chance to fail, and it seems obvious to me that it has consequences for failure. It seems like a fairly straightforward task that an expert wouldn't have a problem with it, so that is an easy DC." and then only says "Ok...

    D&D 5E (2014) Telegraph This

Adventurers are almost always decked out in jewelry and expensive-looking gear, so having the greedy duergar comment on how well paid you must be, eyeing off a piece of jewelry or flat-out asking for cash makes sense, as does having them discussing cash woes while the PCs are in earshot. For...

D&D 5E (2014) Common sense isn't so common and the need for tolerance

If you ever trawl through threads where DMs get together to crow about how their PCs do dumb things, then take special note: A very high number of those stories come down to the DM failing to communicate something to the player, the player declaring their action and the DM interpreting that in...

D&D 5E (2014) Long Rest while trapped in an alert Dungeon

According to: https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/guest-blog/hunter-gatherers-show-human-populations-are-hardwired-for-density/ If your kobolds were raiding a site only 1 mile from their lair, then their total population is ~100. If the PCs showed up and have only had to fight ~20 kobolds...

How would you stat a boomerang?

1d6 seems too high. You're saying that throwing a stick at someone is the equivalent of stabbing them with a spear or slicing them with an axe. It's just not. Heck, even 1d4 seems silly.

D&D 5E (2014) Xanathar's Guide to Everything: What subclasses made the cut?

If you want you can actually do this. It works just fine for a surprising number of subclass/class combos.

    D&D 5E (2014) PC Personality Type Alternative

I don't feel that alignment really serves a purpose. It's so vague and contradictory that you can't say what alignment any historical or fictional figure is, nor can you decide how a character with a specific alignment would behave in a situation. The only real 'value' to it is that you can...

    D&D 5E (2014) removing heavy armor profiency

Strength already compares poorly to dexterity for most purposes. This will make that imbalance worse. I would suggest that if you're getting rid of heavy armor, you probably also want to get rid of medium armor (because while there is a mechanical divide between them, the thematic divide is...

D&D 5E (2014) What else to I need to consider for a 5e realism hard mode?

I'm confused. In one post you say you want to stop rocket tag. In another post you say you want a duel between a giant and a knight to come down to effectively a single blow either way, which to me is what rocket tag means. I'll agree with others that it sounds like D&D isn't really the system...

D&D 5E (2014) Planar Ally is it the most powerful conjuration spell in the game? How do you run it?

Yeah, but that means the DM suddenly needs to keep a tight rein on cash. I much prefer being able to hand out all the money I feel makes sense and having the PCs unable to directly spend it on completing adventures, so they have to buy into the world with it instead.

D&D 5E (2014) Planar Ally is it the most powerful conjuration spell in the game? How do you run it?

MechaTarrasque - spamming is handled by the DM getting annoyed with you and simply having creatures refuse your bargain. As for all long casting times being rituals? That would be problematic. There's quite a few that would have serious implications if they could be used without a resource...

    More Dynamic Fighting Styles

Hillsy7 - that way madness lies. Holding back from changes merely because of other classes is just a ticket to never changing anything. As for balance? I don't actually think these changes have much of a balance impact. They're reducing raw damage and adding specialized benefits, while reducing...
