    Indispensable and Valuable Non-Fiction Sources

Seems like this thread and the history / mythology one I started should be merged, many seem very much on the same wavelength....

Bathing: a History Related to the earlier comment on cleanliness, this is a very good article on bathing before the 17th Century, which will probably surprise a lot of people. Bathing: A history

Mondays Mercenaries Mondays Mercenaries Every Monday I'm going to try to do a small post on this thread with some cool historical mercenaries which you can use as inspiration for fighter types (or bad guys or NPCs or whatever) for your campaign. Todays Monday Mercenary is the Gallowglass...

    History, Mythology, Art and RPGs

I did write a book, called Codex Martialis, available now as a PDF at DrivethroughRpG for $8 :) Seriously though some of this stuff will probably end up in an academic article at some point, I'm still compiling research for an essay on a somewhat overlapping subject. This RPG stuff is a bit of...

    History, Mythology, Art and RPGs

All I can say, everything I wrote in the article above is sourced. The comment by John of Wallingford for example complaining about Vikings bathing every week and changing their clothes every day was recorded in his Chronica Joannis Wallingford which is in turn reprinted in this book...

So yes, Gandalf was a real person Actually there were several Gandalfs, but one in particular who is relevant to our Elves. Ãlfheimr - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia I wonder if it is a coincidence Tolkein named his hero after this guy from where the Elves historically lived? ;) I...

How is BaB computed for monsters in 3.5?

I'm looking at the Brown Bear in the Sovelior SRD, and I notice it has 6 HD but a BaB of only 4. Is there a table to determine this ratio for Monsters as for PCs?

Martial Pool - a New combat mechanic?

Another review came out, apparently from another one of the staff reviewers at RPGNow, and the Martial Pool in particular was singled out for praise. Slightly annoying that he says I'm not trying to make combat realistic, since I was (everything in there is right out of HEMA and a few other...

    Thinking about Warhammer?

I've been convinced enough to buy a copy of the rulebook on Amazon right now, it sounds a lot like the kind of game I like. I'm looking forward to checking it out. G.

    History, Mythology, Art and RPGs

Hi Jack, First of all thanks. I really appreciate somebody taking a thoughtful look at these ideas and it sounds like you and I have similar tastes in gaming. Your setting is a fascinating era / corner of the world, I often thought what a cool milieu that would be when reading of Harald...

Martial Pool - a New combat mechanic?

Yeah that sounds workable to me, though it never did quite make sense to me why Fighters and Wizards would be so bad at skills in 3.5, I know it's needed for balance but.... anyway for skill checks within a combat I allow people to use the Martial Pool, thats in the Codex. For outside of...

Yeah she's awesome and an ideal archetype for any kind of swashbuckling / pirates / three musketeers type game. She's in the original list, in the OP, there are two other links on her there which have a bit more detail than the Wiki page. One of my all-time favorite historical characters :) G.

    History, Mythology, Art and RPGs

Well when you've got things like touch effects for say, paralysis or various spells, you've got critical hits based on weapon type, defensive spell and natural effects (stoneskin, protection from arrows etc.) which resist certain type of attacks and etc. that level of abstraction can get tricky...

Martial Pool - a New combat mechanic?

Inspired by this discussion, I ran a new sample combat, Boar vs. Leopard codexmartialis.com • View topic - Leopard vs. Boar Normally a Leopard would avoid trying to tackle a full grown boar, but there is a drought. Times are tough, risky measures are called for. Codex version of each...
