Martial Pool - a New combat mechanic?

That doesn't seem to fit that well with how the pool works though does it? Instead of giving a creature normal bonus to hit with it's "primary attack" and a -5 (or -2 with Multiattack) with a secondary weapon, based on arbitrary factors and forced on a fixed pattern (however comforting to...

Martial Pool - a New combat mechanic?

yes that is what I was thinking... so if you were unfortunate enough to be grappling with a large animal like a panther or a lion, it could use all five attacks as rake attacks or bites for example. Do you think that makes sense or should there be any restriction on doing multiple attacks of...

Martial Pool - a New combat mechanic?

What do you think is the best way to handle Martial Pool for monsters / animals with multiple attacks? What we have been doing is to give them one MP per HD, plus one per extra attack. So for example a leopard would have 5 MP, 3 for his HD, plus one for each "extra" claw attack. His rake...

Yeah that is a very good test, Myarmoury is in general an excellent resource for people interested in European swords and weapons of all types, both actual antiques (they have a fatnastic gallery of antique weapons) and a really useful guide to modern replicas including dozens of in-depth...

Martial Pool - a New combat mechanic?

Hey one more question. How do you think I should handle the Combat Expertise feat with the Codex system? I don't like using all those -2 to this +4 to that kind of modifiers, and Full Attack Option and Defensive Fighting use the MP in the codex so I thought Combat Expertise should as well...

Martial Pool - a New combat mechanic?

Ok but I'm still having a little trouble following this exactly. Can you describe how this would work in a less abstract example? Lets say there is a party of four PCs walking down a hallway, not particularly expecting any trouble, and a party of goblins pops out of a secret door behind them...

Martial Pool - a New combat mechanic?

Thats an interesting idea Achan. I was thinking of something more prosaic, like having the potential surprise 'victims' make a reflex save or something and if they lose, roll a d6 to see how many Martial Pool they lose (so potentially up to 1 and a half rounds) But this idea of 'gambling'...

Martial Pool - a New combat mechanic?

No I wouldn't wan't to do anything that primitive, but I would like to figure out an elegant way to give one side an advantage if they achieved surprise and the other side a disadvantage if they were caught off guard Here are some of the considerations I'd like to encompass: 1) Surprise...

Martial Pool - a New combat mechanic?

I had a question for you Achan. Have you ever thought of a good way to improve on the 3.5 surprise rule? I'd like something a bit different, maybe a little more like the old 1E system. Have you ever thought about it? G.

What I mean is, in terms of how weapons (or other damaging effects) work, there is no differentiation between going through or going around the armor. In D20 / OGL you usually have one variation or the other, either AC, where armor effectively is always part of avoiding being hit (tied in with...

yes but as far as I know, the crown jewels, the symbol of rule of basically any King or Emperor of anywhere always include a "scepter" or some other kind of fancy mace. Swords also of course as they are basically the ultimate prestige hand-weapon. G.

Yes it's one of the very few pop history shows I've ever seen that really got it right, Mike Loades really gets it. Of course, and the primary 'flaw' for 95% of the combatants was that the armor usually did not cover the whole body. The number of people who could afford cap-a-pied armor...

Three things you might be shocked to know about Armor Ok part II of the armor essay, this should be the more fun part, dealing with mail and plate armor. The word is Mail not "Chainmail"... ..but call it whatever you like. Current belief is that it dates back as far as about 500 BC, and it...

I did like the Human Weapon series though there were some things about it which were a little off -that's pretty typical for those kind of documentaries. Never heard of Command and Colors maybe I should look it up. Hardly ever play board games any more I miss them, I don't know too many people...

First review is out. A staff review from DrivethroughRPG I wasn't even expecting (I haven't sent any copies for formaI reviews yet as i still have some problems with the Table of Contents and the Index I need to fix) it's short but somewhat to my amazement, it's a quite good review I think...

Martial Pool - a New combat mechanic?

I think that smart game designers such as yourself could very likely come up with many other clever ways to use the M.P. mechanic, which is indeed why I started this thread. However as you yourself pointed out, it’s not that easy to fit anything new into 3.X because of all the cascading...

Martial Pool - a New combat mechanic?

Yeah eventually somebody who is really plugged in to the RPG world will hopefully find it and like it, I really don't know anybody. I'll probably send it to some staff reviewers on there and here on Enworld now that it's been out for a while and we have fixed some of the small editing issues...
