Ben Riggs: 'The Golden Age of TTRPGs is Dead'

Just doesn't feel that Ben has paid much attention to the publicly available playtests. I guess there is potential they will decide to diverge massively from where the playtests are landing, which would open up a number of the above risks, but if they stick to what they are currently showing...

D&D General Does D&D (and RPGs in general) Need Edition Resets?

I don't think all the PHB sales occurring now / last couple of years are to the existing customers, otherwise I would ask why they are churning through PHBs so quickly. But if they were, then the updated book should sell just as well to these customers churning through their books? Otherwise...

WotC Shannon Appelcline the layoffs and the OGL fiasco.

Especially when original comment was that 'lied about capitulating' drawing a direct line between lie and falsehood.

WotC Shannon Appelcline the layoffs and the OGL fiasco.

I think there is a difference between breaking a promise you had an intention to keep, then making a promise you never intended to keep- the latter is a falsehood, the first isn't to my mind. Yes it turned out wrong, and people should explain why / look to rectify where can, but it doesn't make...

WotC [Updated!] Hasbro Laying Off 1,100 Employees

Was going to say, my kids still enjoyed toys, but it was very much concentrated on Lego, thanks to the great variety of sets you can get these days, and with all them the potential to build what you want, rather than other toys being somewhat more locked in as such. In addition, for the ones...

What RPG do you most regret parting with?

I don't think any particular RPGs, but I do regret getting rid of all the 3e forgotten realms setting books we had, while we wouldn't go back to 3e I did enjoy reading the lore and think could repurpose a chunk for 5e, while also ignoring spellplague / sundering etc.

    What is A Mountain?

In our own country Zardnaar: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Maunganui_(mountain) The main thing generally though is to make sure it isn't a K'Chain Che'Malle device instead (having just read some Malazan books)

Systems That Model The World Rather Than The Story

An interesting OP I think, and I have a few thoughts on it, forgive me but this may get a bit meandering :) Leaving the physics side to the side, I think there can be a bit of a blur between World and Story, depending on the game and how 'world shaking' it is as such. The more 'down to earth'...

    D&D 5E (2014) [+] Ways to fix the caster / non-caster gap

Been pondering this one, and I'm not one to play fighters typically, and we don't tend to play beyond 11th / 12th level to see where problems really arise, but when I think of a good fighter, I'm thinking someone who is fast /instinctive and dangerous in combat, able to take on multiple...

Strike Ending & Amazon Antitrust - Streaming Services: Power Rankings, FALL 2023

One point in Disney Plus' favour for our household, is that they will be streaming Doctor Who outside of the UK.

Final Fantasy XIV Getting an Official TTRPG

Definitely excited. I haven't played other FF games really, but I love FFXIV for its world, characters and story. I tend to play it as a huge single player game with some forced group content (joined a great free company to help with that though), so don't play it continuously like I do...

Trail of Cthulhu 2nd edition announced

Interesting, just grabbed a whole lot of Trail of Cthulhu stuff from humble bundle - may have a good deal there as doing 2nd edition, between that and looking to back Cohors Cthulhu soon when that comes to Kickstarter, feels like if can convince people to play it will be dabbling a bit into...

D&D General What is player agency to you?

I think there is more room for gaming the DM in the more traditional style RPGs, e.g. where people reward role play over roll play, so people really good at former can end up having Charisma, Wisdom and Intelligence as dump stats, but still end up managing to convince / negotiate etc well thanks...

D&D General What is player agency to you?

I feel that that is accurate, though reserve right to change my mind if you point out some flaws in my thinking :) Having in my head the background information (or detailed in notes in some instances) does help me work out the responses to actions the players undertake. Doesn't always work, as...

D&D General What is player agency to you?

When I used to run sandbox games, it was a bit of both - enjoying the reveal of certain things, and enjoying the output of the imagination, even if I only divulged the outcomes of what I imagined, or kept the motives for NPC actions hidden, they enjoyed the experience of seeing it in action. One...

D&D General What is player agency to you?

To me, there is quite a bit of difference - in the sandbox version the customer has achieved what they set out to do - they wanted to go over there, and they got over there. In the module, they wanted to go over there, and they didn't get there, they were bounced back. For a module - next step...

    Aliens vs Predator: The Survey

For me ultimately it comes down to the aliens feeling more alien, vs the predators feeling more human like / more like many other sci fi stories, especially once get beyond the first movie that maintains a fair bit of mystery for most of it. I still enjoy many of the other predator movies, but...

    D&D Movie/TV D&D Movie Hit or Flop?

To be fair, I think talking at slight cross purposes - HaT triggered a 25 million write down for Hasbro as didn't do as well as they expected at box office (which does counter some early reporting around HaT doing better than expected). I think Bedir is stating that while that 25 million hit...

D&D General What is player agency to you?

When I think on it further (always a dangerous thing), I can see there are two levels of player agency occurring, out of game and in game. The first, out of game, I see most people (Except perhaps the OP, and others in the forum that seem to feel 5e gives too much in game player agency) giving...
