    Why do RPGs have rules?

Bit of a sidetrack, but which are the 3 cities here? By talking about down to one, I'm assuming you mean Minas Tirith, Minas Morgul and Osgiliath, but there is also at least Dol Amroth and Pelargir, plus other settlements they mention Aragorn and the Grey Company encountering that some sources...

D&D 5E (2024) Jeremy Crawford: “We are releasing new editions of the books”

I think part of the issue ultimately is that most of us here aren't really WOTC's ultimate intended audience for these books - like I've said previously in other threads, I think WOTC is mainly targetting these books for the players who each year buy the core books, coming into the hobby or...

    Forgotten Realms edition question

Similar to aco175 above, though I think 3rd edition also has a fair amount, and has some of my favourite FR supplements, but any of those 3 I think has a good amount of information for any of the locales you may want to visit, with a good sense of what populates the world, what states /...

    Why do RPGs have rules?

I could be wrong, but I feel like maybe that is Micha's point - most character sheets list the sort of stuff you expect the character to do, and with d&d I feel that is more than just combat related, it can have skills showing what character good at and not, spells etc - if PbtA games are...

    Why do RPGs have rules?

Thought I'd jump on here, as ties to something I've been thinking on since reading a bit of that closed thread, around immersion - one of the reasons I like playing in the Forgotten Realms or Dragonlance, is because I know the settings well from various material (Campaigns, novels, computer...

The "I Didn't Comment in Another Thread" Thread

Lord of the Rings Online is still going as well, I have dipped in and out of it over the years, but been into it again for over a year now, looking forward to hopefully visiting Umbar hopefully this year :) Is still grindy, but I do like how it captures the feel of middle earth to me, and so...

Pathfinder 2E Pathfinder To Get New Core Rulebooks Soon

Quite possibly, I think it could be interpreted to suggest they didn't think it needed to be under the OGL, but wanted to to release their content under it, and so could have stripped it out. I think it does somewhat hinge on how much the bit of 'without using Wizards' copyrighted expressions...

What came to my mind when I First saw your lyrics was: Pizza in the morning And in the afternoon Pizza in the evening And underneath the moon!

Pathfinder 2E Pathfinder To Get New Core Rulebooks Soon

Looking up their statement on the 12th, it did have this bit: 'By the time we went to work on Pathfinder Second Edition, Wizards of the Coast’s Open Game Content was significantly less important to us, and so our designers and developers wrote the new edition without using Wizards’ copyrighted...

    D&D 5E (2024) How did I miss this about the Half races/ancestries

While I don't think it says it is good, if all the settings and the core books have racism in them (these 'misgivings' are pretty well shown as racism really) it does tend to lend itself to the idea that racism is a natural outcome of different races / species existing, and so while we have...

    D&D 5E (2024) How did I miss this about the Half races/ancestries

Well yeah, the implementation itself seems flawed, and I think they need to rethink it, and a later post of mine said it would also be good to maintain the two existing mixed races as examples of the new mechanics when they land on them, albeit with different names.

    D&D 5E (2024) How did I miss this about the Half races/ancestries

I think something like that would be a reasonable middle ground - I like their intention of having lots of mixed races, but given historical usage then having half-elf and half-orc as examples (though preferably with a change in name, not sure what would be good names though, elfman and orcman...

    D&D 5E (2024) How did I miss this about the Half races/ancestries

To be fair, I think what WOTC said was that the 'half' bit of the naming was racist - as could echo real life insults. It isn't that a race of beings that are a mixture of elf and humans is an issue / racist, it is call them half-elf instead of say Khoravar like in Eberron. Then there are the...

    D&D 5E (2024) How did I miss this about the Half races/ancestries

It seems a bit of a stretch to suggest that referring to a silent majority means that they are referring to Nixon's policies - Silent Majority has been used many times before and since Nixon to refer to the feeling that there is a large group of people who are choosing not to speak up about...

    D&D 5E (2024) How did I miss this about the Half races/ancestries

I think it is more no published setting should echo real life bigotry when portraying it, don't fall back on known racist rhetoric from history, but use it's own - say Elves don't like Dwarves because of what the dwarves have done (cutting down trees, mining too greedily), but don't describe the...

    D&D 5E (2024) How did I miss this about the Half races/ancestries

While we have seen times where people have been attacked for what they are producing (though I would argue most examples we see are either the ones decried as cancel culture, that seldom look to lead to actual cancellations, and otherwise attacks based around 'go woke, go broke') - ultimately...

The "I Didn't Comment in Another Thread" Thread

Thinking about it, there is often the third one, which does start slightly differently: Speaker one 'gban pizza offers pineapple on pizza, that is just one straw too many with other issues I have with gban pizza, I'm not buying from them again' And then speaker two goes into either opening...

The "I Didn't Comment in Another Thread" Thread

Possibly needs a bit of set up? Thinking something like below, which goes two ways, and think have seen both in action and sometimes people think one is happening when the other is and vice versa: Speaker one 'Did you know gban pizza offers pizza with pineapple on it? I won't buy pizza from...

Thanks, makes sense, with the two discussions I ended up conflating them and getting confused , thanks for the clarification.

    D&D 5E (2024) How did I miss this about the Half races/ancestries

But in their fantasy worlds there is. Like James Cameron's Avatar with the Na'vi (translation the people), or with the various Star Trek races treated as people. Am I misunderstanding somewhere, or is there an argument being made that it is all fantasy, so fantasy racism doesn't match with real...
