WotC Announces OGL 1.1 -- Revised Terms, Royalties, and Annual Revenue Reporting

Yes, Critical Role is using WotC's copyrighted and trademarked work. They are not the OGL. They are relying on good old fair use. Just like every videogame streamer ever.

WotC Announces OGL 1.1 -- Revised Terms, Royalties, and Annual Revenue Reporting

The success of Critical Role has never had anything to do with the OGL. They may have published their first campaign setting books under the OGL(I think, I am not sure on this one), but their massive success is due to their streaming, which isn't governed by the OGL in any way. A lot of...

WotC Announces OGL 1.1 -- Revised Terms, Royalties, and Annual Revenue Reporting

3rd edition and 5th edition are very different games. 3rd and 3.5 are much more complicated, and they have a lot more small fiddley pieces that interact with each other. 5e on the other hand involves fewer options, and the options you do choose tend to be larger and more self contained...

WotC Announces OGL 1.1 -- Revised Terms, Royalties, and Annual Revenue Reporting

Except for the fact that publishing on DMsGuild allows you to use WotC's worlds and intellectually property. Good luck publishing your new Dragonlance adventure on DriveThru Rpg. I'm sorry but a company allowing other game devolopers to play in their their toys in their world, and just...

What's All This About The OGL Going Away?

Historically new editions of the game are not compatible with the books of previous editions. The designers have stated over and over again that 1D&D will be backward compatible with 5E adventures and supplements will be. Calling it a new edition would actually cause more confusion.

They better not or LaNasa and NuTSR will sue them for stealing their business model.

D&D 5E (2024) What new jargon do you want to replace "Race"?

You keep trying to make everything an absolute. Everything must be exactly this or that, no in-between. Real life is complicated. I think it is important that WotC makes a good faith effort to avoid being racist, and that they should listen to their audience when they say they find thing...

D&D 5E (2024) What new jargon do you want to replace "Race"?

I am sorry but people should not have to give a Game the benefit of the doubt, about whether it is being racist or not. It's a game people are playing for fun. They last thing you want when introducing new players to the game, is for them to see langue that could be racist dog whistles and...

    D&D 5E (2024) What is positive?

Peoples tastes and sensibilities change over time, and between generations. The audience for 1D&D is not the same as it was for 5E. Fifth edition was literally targeted at their Grandparents! Leaving aside the term race, and all of the associated baggage for now. People tastes in fantasy...

What's All This About The OGL Going Away?

How do we know that you haven't been paid off? Your accusations are just the sort of thing a secret WotC spy would say to throw people off your scent. (I posted before I saw the mod post. I assumed it was so over the top it had to be sarcasm, and just having a bit of fun. If it wasn't, I am...

WotC WotC needs an Elon Musk

There is also the difference of why they each used the Darkhold. Dr. Strange used it to save people he loved. While Wanda tried to use it to bring back those she had lost.

WotC WotC needs an Elon Musk

Marvel Studios under Kevin Feige has managed to do an exceptional job of balancing the weight of the cannon and accessibility for new viewers, but by the end of phase three things started getting a bit shaky. I think the sort of soft reboot or reset after Endgame was necessary. The analogy...

WotC WotC needs an Elon Musk

The Morbius movie is not a MCU movie, it is part of the Sony Spiderman Cinematic Universe. Two totally different worlds with nothing to do with each other, except they both have the same spiderman in them. Nothing confusing about that, I don't know why people keep getting it mixed up.

WotC WotC needs an Elon Musk

I am actually pretty happy with what they are doing now. Have about a decade of interconnected film that advance an overarching story, then have a big finale to wrap up arc, and do a sort of soft reboot. Kill off a bunch of characters, introduce some new ones, introduce a new overarching...

D&D 5E (2024) What new jargon do you want to replace "Race"?

This is why I a pushing for species. It is kind of dry, sterile, and boring, but in the end I think that is a good thing. I think it is best to use a strictly out of game term, that is in no way connected to the in-game fiction. The entire concept of "Fantasy Races" is at its core a...

WotC WotC needs an Elon Musk

I am sorry, but I am not trying to call you a monster. I was just saying what you want would not be profitable for Disney. It is fine that you want what you want. There is nothing wrong with it. I just disagree with you. Just because someone disagrees with what you say they are not calling...

What's All This About The OGL Going Away?

Whenever you see an online discussion of copywrite or trademark related issues, the amount of confusion and conflicting opinions on how even the most basic issues related to trademark and copywrite work, really shows how useful the OGL is. It is one of the issues that seems simple on the...

D&D General Why are we fighting?

I used to like the idea of using morale rules and fleeing enemies, but using them ended up being more trouble than they were worth. I liked the idea of shortening combats and adding some realistic behavior to the game, but they ended up causing several problems. First of all if you are playing...

WotC WotC needs an Elon Musk

The problem is that a major Marvel movie will cost you something like half a billion dollars to produce. There just are not enough hardcore fans to make a movie profitable. If you can't make films that appeal to a wider audience of casual fans you will be bankrupt in short order.

What's All This About The OGL Going Away?

This is a point that seems to get lost on a lot of people. The splatbook churn business model that D&D followed from 2nd to 4th editions is destructive and unsustainable. The problem with trying to make money churning out splatbooks as quickly as possible is that each book tends to sell fewer...
