    D&D 5E (2024) A critical analysis of 2024's revised classes

Oh, that bonus only happens when they're under the effects of Rage? Yeah that seems odd, "I'm so angry I get better at creeping up on things" does hit the fiction askance.

Spend those Hero Tokens! We had an interesting chat about those last session actually: the group went in on spending them during my free-form dungeon-as-montage, and they were saying that they felt a lot easier about spending them in that context because it didn't "feel selfish" since the...

What makes setting lore "actually matter" to the players?

I was watching a GDC talk by one of the designers of Magic, and he was tossing out a number of lessons he’d learned over his 20 years doing that job. One which I thought was interesting for this discussion was “give the players a sense of ownership.” Their specific example was the community...

That’s where my mind went too.

    OSR Errant

Would you veer towards Freebooters or Errant for a procedure focused (what are Moves if not fiction triggered procedures…) OSR game?

D&D General A Rant: DMing is not hard.

The 5.24 books talk about this a bit, mainly on the social contract side. Daggerheart takes a page from the narrative side of the house and includes explicit Player Principles and Best Practices (the former right up front before you get to character creation rules) to help shape expectations of...

    OSR Errant

*she. The Author is Ava Islam. As called out in the OP's post. Interestingly while there's obvious BITD influence, if you read some of the design blogs and entries you'll see that some of them are in direct answer to and discussion with the OSR blog-world and other designers tackling similar...

Top 5 RPGs you want to play (player or GM) in 2026?

Why not combine these ;). Some good hacks on the HMTW discord! Wrapping up my long campaign of this soon, I think we'll try something of the below and then circle back to a "a generation later" redux to push in new directions. My list: 1. Wanderhome. 2. Errant. 3. Bump in the Dark (Monster...

Same thing with the Elementalist Foundation. It’s basically an Experience of “air bender” or whatever that you can also use for an action roll or damage boost.

    Daggerheart General Thread [+]

Had asked one of my players who I knew was in another game or two with local folks if anybody there might be interested in joining our game. One guy is, and although he wasn’t done with character creation and didn’t want to just jump in he came and spectated all 3 hours last night - which meant...

    OSR Errant

At least one person is running it besdies the writer, over at Deeper in the Game he did a series on Errant in 2024 talking about the classes and then how he approaches running it. I'm torn between this FITD / D20 fusion and Freebooters on the Frontier (PBTA/ B/X fusion) on the dungeon-crawly...

What makes setting lore "actually matter" to the players?

Stonetop tends to present “everybody knows / some might know / very few if anybody knows” levels of world details for things that recede into the deep past or esoteric topics. I find that’s a nice way to bin things, like of course everybody knows there’s demons that lurk in dark water but few...

    What's the best potato?

Hash browns like a real home fries hash? the shredded Waffle House style? Blocks that are basically a big freaking tater tot? I went with fries. There's a bunch of different ways that can go, and they're almost all amazing.

What makes setting lore "actually matter" to the players?

I was literally cracking a joke dude. I know you really enjoy showing up in threads and staking out your personal preference position and hammering away at it to let us know that these specific opinions are out there, but you do almost always come across as an outlier even in a relatively...

What makes setting lore "actually matter" to the players?

"average TTRPG is deeply invested in simulation and lore" factoid actually just statistical error. average TTRPG player cares minimally about lore and simulationism. Simulations Micah who lives on ENW & reads 3000 pages of lore a day is an outlier adn should not have be counted.

What gets me playing Draw Steel and not Pathfinder 2e?

You're not really "tracking" that per se in that it's not ongoing. It becomes part of the action resolution, in the same way as calculating damage or hit/miss. DS! does have a lot more potential for cascading actions though, between forced move into circumstances + triggered actions (sometimes...
