    D&D 5E (2024) A critical analysis of 2024's revised classes

Unfortunately for that plan, I think a lot of players are attached to their one particular PC, not that they’re contributing a fraction of a party gestalt that everyone is sharing in. I think most TTRPGs are meant to be distinct from a cooperative game like Pandemic where role agency is assumed...

    D&D 5E (2024) A critical analysis of 2024's revised classes

That would be a big help, yes. One the core reasons for the caster/noncaster discrepancy is that D&D spells have always been written as explicit permission to assert a change into the narrative without asking the GM permission (other than corner case adjudication); other methods of resolution...

    D&D 5E (2024) A critical analysis of 2024's revised classes

I do think, though, that one way to solve the divide would be to make martials not just provably better at combat but obviously better at combat. Put "control over narrative" and "control over combat" as two opposed poles that class archetypes would have to pick between.

    D&D 5E (2024) A critical analysis of 2024's revised classes

100% agreement. There are too many popular assumptions around class tropes and design that are in direct contradiction. There's no way to square the circle.

    D&D 5E (2024) A critical analysis of 2024's revised classes

Why would people complain when they're winning? Besides, "wizard fan" isn't really a nuanced take. People who prefer caster supremacy are generally those who are accustomed to and comfortable with the tropes of broad and powerful classic D&D magic, and having the class(es) that are skilled...

D&D General Baldur's Gate 3 Sells Over 20 Million Copies

I tend to think of it as the ceiling is overall lower for Mature-rated offerings, but there are also lot of concepts that either require or are enhanced by more Mature material to really capture what the concept is offering. BG3 is interesting because I think there are strong arguments for both...

D&D General Baldur's Gate 3 Sells Over 20 Million Copies

Whether or not any one particular property is enhanced or diminished by sexual material is very often a personal aesthetic judgment. I see plenty of posts on fiction-oriented sites both asking for books with more sexual material, and books with none, quite frequently. As examples, I don't...

D&D General Baldur's Gate 3 Sells Over 20 Million Copies

The diminishment is going to happen no matter what direction they go, is my point. There's no "correct path forward" to suss out from BG3's success.

    2026 Intentions-Goals-Objectives... maybe even resolutions!

I have other friends who have systems they want to try out, but my 2026 goals are to get games of Shadow of the Weird Wizard and Stormlight Archive going. My broader but more challenging goal is to get all of my primary tables off using 5e as their primary game, and have something else in their...

Let's Talk About Our Year In TTRPGs

Kept on keeping on. Friday table: My friend is primarily DMing 5e, our campaign that started in late 2023 is nearing its endpoint at 15th level. I also ran a few sessions of a fairly radical 5e experiment, with AD&D style multiclassing, class unlocks attached to dungeon items, and diegetic...

D&D 5E (2024) What 2024 class have you played the most

@ECMO3 lives in a very different play environment than most of us, I've gathered.

D&D General Baldur's Gate 3 Sells Over 20 Million Copies

The easiest way for a company to not have success is to slavishly copy previous success, leading to rapidly diminishing returns.

    Thread block

There are vehicles to track people's internet presence beyond this site. And most people, in my experience, don't have disparate identities on different sites. They use the same or similar user names, which are often shared with their major social media identities. Not to mention doxxing into...

D&D 5E (2024) So, what does the Artificer "replace"?

PHB to PHB also isn’t a particularly fair comparison. The first PHB for 4e was intentionally limited since they planned to release more PHBs every year. 4e managed to have 22 classes and 5 books of new subclasses/paragon paths in a 2 year period, the same period in which 5e released exactly...

    The "math" of RPGs

Yep. And crucially, people remember unexpected occurrences, not the expected ones. Everyone remembers the time the 0.1% chance of catastrophic failure happens, not the 99.9% of the time the reliable success happens.

    The "math" of RPGs

I mean, it's really difficult in a turn-based strategy game. All of those games are meant to prioritize making good opening moves, which puts you in a stronger position for the next turn, until your advantages snowball to the point where victory is inevitable. 4X games are all like that, RTS...

D&D 5E (2024) Wizards of the Coast promises to release more “CRPGs that are going to be as serious as BG3” without Larian

Claude's is the only house I didn't do, and @Ruin Explorer makes a solid point; I like most of the game but I really don't feel like running around the school to gather up trinkets to get S-tier relationships just to see it.
