D&D General The Monsters Know What They're Doing ... Are Unsure on 5e24

So you can't understand a different setting? Or are you just saying you prefer a setting that you are used to, i.e.. Warcraft? I get the alignment thing, and I don't want to go down that hole. But to be taken aback by a setting not matching the one you grew up with. That seems acceptable. To...

D&D General The Monsters Know What They're Doing ... Are Unsure on 5e24

I realize you are speaking in general terms, which is why I can sarcastically reply back in the same general terminology. Your quote: You can see the argument you're making here, right? That players don't care about the DMs hard work regarding lore. That a DM who limits things based on their...

D&D General The Monsters Know What They're Doing ... Are Unsure on 5e24

This is the most limited take I have ever seen. So you speak for all players? None of them care? As a player, I care. I care a lot. Every group I have ever played with has had players care a lot about the setting. Just because you don't, doesn't mean that is true of others.

D&D General The Monsters Know What They're Doing ... Are Unsure on 5e24

Congratulations. Then you have found your niche. Much like the people who want only Sword and Sorcery, or only low magic campaigns, or only campaigns where sexuality is encouraged or restricted, or only cogwheel and steampunk exist, or only a campaign where everyone is a little Godzilla or other...

D&D General The Monsters Know What They're Doing ... Are Unsure on 5e24

Those are all great reasons to want to play a tortle. And you are correct, if that is the only DM you play with, and they don't allow tortles, then you will not get a chance to play one. And you are correct, some DMs never switch up their world. So, you're stuck. But, you are not stuck with...

D&D General The Monsters Know What They're Doing ... Are Unsure on 5e24

Then what is your reason? State it simply and clearly. What is your reason for playing a tortle in a game where tortles don't exist?

D&D General The Monsters Know What They're Doing ... Are Unsure on 5e24

I'm not part of this, but this can be answered easily. They give you the ability you are after. You are clearly after an ability because @AlViking clearly stated they would grant you the racial trait. It's right there in the DM's Guide (2014). It literally gives examples of how you can trade...

D&D General The Monsters Know What They're Doing ... Are Unsure on 5e24

Everyone, and I mean everyone, has limits as a DM and player. It's just where the line is drawn. That's it. That is the only difference.

    D&D General Best D&D Setting?

I second this and here is why. Most players know the settings. They have read the books, especially if they are older players, which I assume they are because you are running 1st edition. This is like a classic setting, but one they may not know much about. That said, if you are running 5e, and...

What is/are your most recent TTRPG purchase(s)?

Fantasy art that I can plug into my notes and/or adventures and the book "The Gamemaster's Book of Non-Player Characters." The book is a lot of fun and full of great ideas. Kudos to the team.

    D&D 5E (2024) A fix for advantage/disadvantage stacking

No problem. And your comment above, about these conversations being "theory crafting" is a great way to look at it. We do the same when we lesson plan as a group. The stuff put out there is always prefaced by phrases such as: "I haven't thought this all the way through," or "Has anyone ever...

    D&D 5E (2024) A fix for advantage/disadvantage stacking

    Thank you for the clarification.

Why do you play games other than D&D?

We played The Witcher, Fallout, and Daggerheart the past few years. Each was short lived. Then we moved to our new D&D campaign. The fact that our group likes D&D, I believe, has nothing to do with market dominance. It has to do with it being a system for everyone. Our table is diverse, and so...

    D&D 5E (2024) A fix for advantage/disadvantage stacking

I just don't see advantage/disadvantage as being a problem, let alone need course correcting. It's simple and elegant, easy for non-math players to understand, and does not swing the already swingy D20 too far either way. I understand the need for some to have layers, hence the +1, +2, +4 etc...

D&D General What character sheets do you use and what do you put on them?

I use the sheets from the PHB. Handwrite everything, and for some of the longer abilities, just put the page number of the ability, spell, etc. Then, after each level, I rewrite the entire character sheet. It really helps me remember my inventory, my abilities, and the ideals, bonds, flaws, etc...

D&D General Your Core Classes if The Core 4 Aren't Allowed

I get it. I just saw that, typed a reply, and then reread what wrote. They are funny. Although, I really was just trying to think out of the box. I figured the races could acquire different types of damage based on their construction. That way you would have a common denominator, like hit...

D&D General Your Core Classes if The Core 4 Aren't Allowed

@W'rkncacnter Hey, why are you laughing at my classes and races? The post asked for out of the box thinking. I thought that fit the bill. 🤷‍♂️

D&D 5E (2024) How do you run an open table game in D&D '24?

I personally think those rules seem pretty solid. The level piece you can just choose to do via milestones as a group. If you want a suggestion, I would do Rime of the Frostmaiden, but only the intro, Ten Towns. This gives you a solid setting, and 10 adventures, many of which are pretty darn...

D&D General The Monsters Know What They're Doing ... Are Unsure on 5e24

His points all hit home because he uses excellent analogies like Living Color, Messi, and Hafþór. ;) No, in all seriousness, his points are very valid. I actually really like the point of fitting the mechanic into the narrative, as opposed to having a narrative and then coming up with a...
