I don't think a d20 skill check is particularly helpful with wilderness exploration. You need a more robust system.

I don't think unified mechanics is good for its own sake. Mechanics should support the thing they are trying to emulate. Sometimes that works with a unified core mechanic. But sometimes you need something bespoke to get it right.

But do they do anything about it. 3.x had much more robust 3 pillar support. But that's obvious: 3.x had much better overall support. I guess one thing I dislike is the low level of support overall. Despite more customers than ever by orders of magnitude, we get very little support.

D&D General Hypothetical: D&D without ability scores (or bonuses)

I think the fiction is usually ducking behind a thing or throwing yourself to the ground or putting up a shield just in time. That said, what if an AoE Dex save was a Reaction but you could move half your speed?

Have you never seen an action movie? Improvement is always on a continuum. You will NEVER improve by 10 pounds in one day. You train to get stronger and then one day you push your PR. When you test that determines how much you improved. You are arguing against a position no one has taken.

What kinds of games do you like, and why?

This is my favorite BSing game. You don't have to read cards or anything like that. just place your tile, drink your beer, and tell war stories.

    Well, original 2E PHB art.

I knew it existed before 2E, I just could not remember where.

This. I require proficiency all the time to make certain checks.

Daggerheart Sold Out in Two Weeks, Has Three-Year Plan in Place

Ooh. Cool. Thanks. FYI for everyone: it is also available on DriveThru.

Daggerheart Sold Out in Two Weeks, Has Three-Year Plan in Place

To be clear, I was never arguing that DH was grimdark. I was arguing against the idea, actually. But I still think the Scar death spiral is somewhere in the neighborhood, and 5E does not have something similar against maybe permanent ability damage but I have never seen it happen in 10 years...

Daggerheart Sold Out in Two Weeks, Has Three-Year Plan in Place

I don't think you are appreciating the combat impact of running out of stress. It means no more beating Thresholds. it means using adversary and environment abilities to cause stress and just doing damage. Also, exhaustion is an okay system for representing "tired" but IME barely comes up. in...

It also means future stress causes HP damage, which is a big deal.

You are still using stats, and that runs counter to the whole idea.

Daggerheart Sold Out in Two Weeks, Has Three-Year Plan in Place

Killing PCs in 5E is not hard if that's your goal. It just isn't fun.

So here's the part where I ask you to name your top Grimdark novels and watch as other people come in to argue with those choices. ;)

D&D General Hope and Fear In D&D

I love improv too, but I also like a solid structure under which to improv, if that makes sense. I would not be comfortable just ad hoc-ing Hope and Fear mechanics for a while campaign.

I much preferred the pre-WotC method: your class and level determined what saves you were good at, and by and large martials had the best saves because Conan.

My favorite grimdark novel is The Heroes by Joe Abercrombie and I don't think there is any reason to think you can't emulate that march toward nihilism with scars in DH.
