I thought I made my goals here pretty clear in the OP: I want the PCs to feel awesome while mowing down enemies that actually pose a threat (for the brief moment they are alive anyway). The real threat is the General and her Warhorse, but if the PCs ignore the knights they will get cut to...

This has turned into an interesting thread. SO many different ways of doing minions, and people seem to be REALLY married to the system they like best.

In one campaign I ran, a thousand years before , Dragons were a much greater threat and so there were lots of underground fortresses and cities. The dragons were defeated by a mythic hero and over time, those fortresses and cities became classic dungeons as monsters, bandits, crazy wizards...

Earthdawn had the best reasons for almost all the old D&D tropes. I really love that setting, even if the game system is the 90sest thing ever.

As I mentioned in the OP, this is not a concern because I am using Fantasy Grounds. Is it? I mean, usually, yes, but more importantly they are there to a) harry the PCs, and b) make the PCs feel awesome. In this case, minions can't just appear out of thin air.
