    D&D General Basic Fantasy?

Welcome! Post this in the D&D variants subforum (see thread at the top of this page) or the TTRPG General subforum and you’ll probably get more replies from folks who have played that system.

    D&D 5E (2024) A critical analysis of 2024's revised classes

    That…seems really unfair.

D&D General Baldur's Gate 3 Sells Over 20 Million Copies

Doing anything “slavishly” is probably not great for success, just generally speaking. On the other hand, iterating on and doing sequels to beloved IP is exactly how most massive entertainment companies got that way. Just sayin’.

    D&D 5E (2024) A critical analysis of 2024's revised classes

Welcome to D&D2024. Unless you have an extreme AoE situation plus a caster with access to strong AoE spells, which they happened to have prepared, martial classes utterly dominate combat. For example, my current level 8 monk does a base damage of 56 HP every round while also automatically...

    D&D 5E (2024) A critical analysis of 2024's revised classes

I’ve often wondered about this. Fighters have always been one of the stronger classes in 5e, yet any thread about martial/caster balance tends to focus on them. I am also struck by how much those discussions tend to focus on top tier abilities, despite those being a negligible part of the...

D&D General Which species would you like to see being introduced next for 2024 D&D?

Revenant and Genasi. Thri-keen would also be cool.

D&D General 500 D&D Magic Items Now Live On Kickstarter

This is exactly up my alley. Just backing for the PDFs as I need to be able to cut and paste into homebrew on DDB. Looks amazing! Now if only WotC would offer the book directly on DDB, that would save me a few steps.

D&D 5E (2024) So, what does the Artificer "replace"?

Your statement that I responded to was "But saying its classes were more homogeneous than 5e classes is just factually inaccurate." You can see it; it's right up there. It is your opinion that its classes were less homogenous; mine is the opposite. I have no idea what point you are making now...

    Street Fighter 2026 Teaser Trailer

What did I just watch? It's really hard to wrap my head around what they are going for here. I assume there will be some kind of story, but you wouldn't know it from that.

D&D 5E (2024) What 2024 class have you played the most

I don’t get to play much, so my main experience comes from what my players choose. But I have played a monk three times (actually three variations on the same character): once to level 14 (transitioning to the 2024 rules at level 8), one level 20 one-shot, and now to level 8. I’ve never...

    Painting minis?

I similarly won’t use Army Painter primer and prefer Citadel spray primers. AP is really inconsistent.

    Painting minis?

Big monsters are fantastic for practicing on! With human-like miniatures we tend to sweat the details. With a shambling mound, earth elemental or whatever it’s a lot easier to go to town and get a result you’ll be happy with even as a beginner. I recommend black primer, then a base coat where...

    Painting minis?

I would add that Games Workshop miniatures are high quality but also have a very particular aesthetic; most aren’t great for D&D if that’s what you are painting for. Dungeons and Lasers makes similarly quality miniatures with a more traditional fantasy aesthetic, but their range is still a bit...

    GM no-roll

I don’t think I discussed 4e’s sales (though WotC dropped it faster than any other edition for a reason), I wrote that it got a lot of pushback for not feeling enough like D&D. Which it did. My point being that if 4e got pushback, imagine what a version of D&D that replaced the entire conflict...

D&D 5E (2024) So, what does the Artificer "replace"?

I think by “factually” you mean “in my opinion.” In MY opinion, the opposite is true with 4e’s emphasis on role over class making it feel more like WoW. Which was the designers express intent. Which is neither good nor bad in itself, but is a reason that to me it didn’t feel like D&D. And I...

D&D General Rewarding player empathy: restoring an NPC’s wings in a starter adventure (Stormwreck Isle)

Because of the way damage works in 5e I don’t know that there are any spells that officially regenerate body parts, though I would rule that greater restoration, heal, and divine intervention are options. Plant a cleric NPC who can assist if the party proves their sincerity, etc. As for the...

    Supergirl Official Teaser Trailer

Recent experience with superhero movies has taught me to wait for reviews before getting too excited, but this trailer makes the movie look pretty fun!

D&D 5E (2024) So, what does the Artificer "replace"?

HARD disagree. 5e was designed to feel like the D&D you remembered just as Gen Xers were reaching an age to want to get back into the game for themselves or for their kids. That doesn’t happen with 4e. The artificer feels like the opposite of 4e design. It feels like quintessential 5e.

D&D 5E (2024) So, what does the Artificer "replace"?

Further to my point above, the idea of clearly defined and necessary roles that need to be filled in the party stams back to OD&D and evolved to reach its apotheosis in CRPGs, especially World of Warcraft, which by all accounts was a strong influence on how 4e built its classes to fit into those...
