Thinking About the Purpose of Mechanics from a Neo-Trad Perspective

I'm not sure its distinctly OC (as culture) the emphasis is more that it can be, that different timings for character conceptualization aren't determinative of the presence of OC play. The distinction between the two prelusory stages was to illustrate OCs compatibility with the timings, I think...

Thinking About the Purpose of Mechanics from a Neo-Trad Perspective

"the difference between having a concept and needing to pick a system that lets you do that," but lmao yes, that is what it could simplify to.

Thinking About the Purpose of Mechanics from a Neo-Trad Perspective

Yes, with the additional possibility that the game might also succeed if the positive space happens to already be ideal for the emulation of that concept, that's just difficult because frequently a concept and set of activities that concept engages in will be nuanced enough to be hard to target...

Thinking About the Purpose of Mechanics from a Neo-Trad Perspective

Most of the rest of what you said is in this interpersonal dispute where people are being accused of coming after you, or you're patting yourself on the back for experience, or trying to litigate what response is ok to give you, but to actually discuss this which is the real meat of this post...

Thinking About the Purpose of Mechanics from a Neo-Trad Perspective

Whats with the aggrievement regarding other people not agreeing with the stance you want to take? Is it really so intolerable that 'most games are only fun because of improv rp so they miss their own point' isn't something you're agreed with on? Or that other people feel you're engaged in an...

Thinking About the Purpose of Mechanics from a Neo-Trad Perspective

So to be clear, I did understand your connotation, I am asserting that the G elements themselves were likely fun for people with different tastes than you, in the same way that Fighting Video Games get a lot of heat for being clunky or unfun but have a devoted following that enjoys them, and...

Thinking About the Purpose of Mechanics from a Neo-Trad Perspective

I think the problem here (putting aside that Kenada is easily one of the most open-minded people on the forum in the first place because there isn't much point in getting personal) is that interpreting roleplaying as an act of improv in the way that you're discussing gives it certain baggage...

Thinking About the Purpose of Mechanics from a Neo-Trad Perspective

Yeah to be clear, there's a subjectivity there that I think naturally divides playerbases, and I don't think it's escapable-- its why I have a player who definetly likes PF2e enough to not mind playing it (and they're excited for Starfinder 2e), but then did simultaneously enjoy the freeform...

But I don't *want* to stock the whole dungeon!

I do this sometimes, except I actually just set up an adversary roster instead of a wandering monster table, and inline the monster distribution to my improv as well. I spend more time on the concepts and ideas in my prep, so a lot of it is actually just brainstorming so cool ideas and...

Thinking About the Purpose of Mechanics from a Neo-Trad Perspective

Only if combat is the only thing that needs rules, a big part of my transition to PF2e, was how excited I was for more robust exploration and downtime stuff. One experience I had in my 4e days, and then continued into 5e (but with much worse combat, so it became egregious) was that our dungeons...

Thinking About the Purpose of Mechanics from a Neo-Trad Perspective

Coming back to this, we're really enjoying Vampire the Requiem now, but humorously I've now seen a player roll 11 dice firsthand and not roll a single success, so now I see what you mean.

Vincent Baker on mechanics, system and fiction in RPGs

Actually I'd even go a step further, the systems themselves perform differently in different hands-- the writer's room in DND tends to come in when the players decide to make a particular plot happen and wants to make sure the sequence of events can't be accidentally de-railed, which you can...

Vincent Baker on mechanics, system and fiction in RPGs

Speaking from experience, its because with the way many of the systems contained within the etc (if not AW itself) are still designed to incentivize a given mechanical expression, in Masks if my character has a high danger score, that functions as a natural incentive to use the move where I roll...

Player Core and Gamemaster Core Remastered Review

Welcome to the party, the new core works more or less perfectly with the existing monsters, Treat Wounds is laid out as a skill action for Medicine, Battle Medicine is a Skill Feat, and Spells are spells-- so that part might not have changed unless there's something different. Crafting is...

Specifically, instead of having an 18 strength that produces a +4 modifier, its a 4 strength, is what they did.

That part has not changed in any way at all, so it's probably not for you.

Pathfinder 2E PF2 Remaster PDFs have been sent out! Talk about/ask questions about them here.

Here's something nice-- the interact action in the book now has an option for one-action 'swap' of an item, previously the only way to do this was to drop whatever you were holding on the ground and pull out something else for an action, switch hitting builds are gonna be pretty happy with that one.

Pathfinder 2E PF2 Remaster PDFs have been sent out! Talk about/ask questions about them here.

The key thing is that the line appears under a subheading that pertains only to damage taken while dying, rather than damage that reduces you to 0 hp, which catches people up that it's the heading that enforces what they're talking about.

Fallacious Follies: Oberoni, Stormwind, and Fallacies OH MY!

I don't disagree but I see the number of viable builds and the power differences at work, as more of a commentary on the system that the Stormwind Fallacy is orthagonal to because at the end of the day, you CAN roleplay the one viable build just fine and in a variety of ways, its the meta being...

Fallacious Follies: Oberoni, Stormwind, and Fallacies OH MY!

I think your phrasing of the claim is fine, but This is actually a statement that I can agree with, build selection precedes the act of roleplaying, loyalty to the first impulse of "my concept is going to be X" is not a part of roleplaying, roleplaying is the portrayal of the character after...
