What Do You Think Of As "Modern TTRPG Mechanics"?

I mean, that's the nice thing about magic systems in general; you can always come up with some kind of fictional rationalization for its proud nails.

    D&D 5E (2024) How I would do 6E.

I see them being developed in parallel (if this was the approach). You keep a simple resolution core, resolve some of the novice pain points from 5e, and then use the advanced line to add in more complex modules that are generally class specific.

    D&D 5E (2024) How I would do 6E.

How I would do a 6e Basic (although many of these changes impact the 6e engine as a whole): -Stats are as previous editions. Mods are stat-10, instead of (stat-10)/2. I'm agnostic on how stats are generated. -There is only one kind of check in the game (an ability check). d20+mod >= Defense...

D&D 5E (2024) Multi-Cantrip Build: 3 / round with BS Extra Attack, EK War Magic and Haste? (5 with Action Surge?)

Extra attack is definitely stronger, especially considering the abundance of buffs that benefit all attacks. I think design is easier if characters are limited to one attack per round as an action. If there are multiple attacks, then almost all damage riders should be limited to "no more...

Help me Brainstorm: Fantasy Roanoke for Daggerheart

They built their colony in the summer, not realizing that the land is only there in the summer; in the other seasons it moves back into the Feywild. And you don't want to be there when winter arrives.

    D&D 5E (2024) How I would do 6E.

I'm sure they will. But this is a thread for how I think they should do it. :)

    D&D 5E (2024) How I would do 6E.

After Book of Nine Swords, I really thought that was the model 4e was going to do. They pretty much did it, but I think it would have been better if they had kept the classic nine-tier system to do it.

    D&D 5E (2024) How I would do 6E.

I don’t want them to start by redesigning the mechanics; I want them to start by examining, consolidating, and revising tropes. Have the game engine and rules transmit a coherent picture of what the game is supposed to be like. Then make the mechanics flexible enough for 3rd parties and...

What Do You Think Of As "Modern TTRPG Mechanics"?

I mean, in a fantasy setting, can’t you just justify any “metagame” currency as being a blessing of the gods diegetically, and thus now OK? Did Micah just end the 4e edition war? :)

What Do You Think Of As "Modern TTRPG Mechanics"?

Sure, but the point of a relatively lightweight and robust resolution system is to just get to the resolution, and not worry too much about the input parameters. There’s always corner cases, but ideally they’re minimized.

Vincent Baker on narrativist RPGing, then and now

I don't know a lot of people who know RPG "theory", but I have RL several players/GMs in my groups who quite enjoy discussing ways to improve the game, in ways that are fairly "high-concept" (as opposed to "how can I make this monster tougher").

What makes setting lore "actually matter" to the players?

It is totally fair to do that. Your judgments will probably be wrong, but such is life!

What Do You Think Of As "Modern TTRPG Mechanics"?

But it doesn't represent an explicit action that could be taken (and be aware of being taken) by the character, which from my recollection is a necessary component of "I'm in the world play". It might be diegetic, but it's also that magic word: disassociated.

What makes setting lore "actually matter" to the players?

I use my own judgment, of course. Deciding who is acting in good faith, who is acting poorly but with good intent, and who is just a bad actor is all part of the confusing guesswork we call life.

What are you reading in 2026?

There are definitely subsets of LitRPGs that aren't also protal/isekai; the most common of which are "System Apocalypses". Dungeon Crawler Carl would qualify, it features a setting in which modern Earth is transformed by some large-scale alien force into a place where normal humans have access...

Help me Brainstorm: Fantasy Roanoke for Daggerheart

Time loop. The colonists are gone the first session or two, and then suddenly reappear, thinking the time is still a month ago. This area of the colony is an above-ground farming area of a xenophobic tribe of underground fungrill. The colonists are in the midst of being “processed”. One of...

What makes setting lore "actually matter" to the players?

People who can't accept criticism of their likes are just as bad as people who continually bash things they hate. (It is fair to be irritated by criticism founded on purely emotional response that is couched as objective, though.)

What makes setting lore "actually matter" to the players?

Oh sure, I certainly wouldn't frame it as a "must not". Just good advice for making life a little less painful.

What makes setting lore "actually matter" to the players?

I mean, you're under no obligation to be constructive. But I generally view the times I'm not acting positively and constructively as moments of weakness; I forgive myself for them but I don't view those actions as being good. There are million things in the world worth feeling anger, rage...

What Do You Think Of As "Modern TTRPG Mechanics"?

My general expectation is that everyone is speaking with personal bias, unless they're calling out with explicit language that they are attempting to be objective in their characterizations. But that's just my preference! You do you.
