Removing The Stat Penaly on Volo's Guide Orcs

As to the side topic, versus orc stats or traits, the biggest barrier to non-magic campaigns is hit point recovery and what classes can heal during combat.

D&D 5E (2014) What is the "role" in roleplaying

So you have a character, and then two sides of the fence when considering how the player acts and as DM on what you expect. They both view what is written on the piece of paper from their own biases. And therefore, I believe you will never reach a universal answer. You can throw as many...

    D&D 5E (2014) DM Needs Help Finding Pacing/RP Balance

Based on the professions you mention, I would recommend a more beer and pretzels fast action game, versus in depth role playing. That lets you play the game, but get a break from real life as well. Most likely players will still role play when the situation dictates, but if you focus on combat...

UA to Become Weekly! Pendleton Ward Helped On New AP!

The adventure time association is for spotlight appeal, if you like adventure time. The real question, is regardless of what celebrity is added to the mix for name recognition, will it be something new and refreshing. As to a UA article every week, I am surprised. From a WOTC perspective it is...

Your Options For D&D 5E Electronic Tools

Model it after the 4E character generator which was simple and did not try to do too much by incorporating other systems. It met the intended purpose of rolling up 4E characters.

    D&D 5E (2014) Mearl's Book Design Philosophy

And overall I believe that 5E would fare better with more classes that are well defined in regards to niche, versus only have a set mount of classes and trying to add archetypes; with an emphasis of combining previous edition classes into broad archetypes. If you are going to condense then...

    Faerie Fire too powerful

I agree on the granularity portion, and that is the price that is paid for simplification of modifiers. The same concept applies to Drow having sunlight sensitivity, etc.

    D&D 5E (2014) UA Warforged vs. Keith Baker's Warforged

The original warforged rocked. However, I do like the 4E version with racial options, while still maintaining equipment slots, but overall still keeping it simple.

Yet More From VOLO - Goblins, Nilbogs, Kobolds, Hobgoblins, & Barghests!

I wish they would get over the concept of disadvantage in sunlight from the Drow and related creatures.

    D&D 5E (2014) What do Plants Want?

What they lack, which is primarily mobility to plant offspring, take out competing plants, or dispatching herbivores, plant eating insects, or eradicate disease/blight.

D&D 5E (2014) Killing is bad: how to establish morality

You could put in mechanical constraints to reward certain behavior, but D&D overall is a violent game. You would have to address the DM side of things as well, in regards to limiting violence for NPCs or monsters. The only time I believe it would be worth the effort is for young players. It also...

D&D 5E (2014) Why I Changed My Mind About Third Party Books

The majority of stuff I purchased via third parties was world settings, and that includes other RPGs like Runequest and Glorantha. Because at the end of the day, I want to experience as a player, or present as a DM a different spin on fantasy. The only other thing that came close was new classes.

VOLO'S GUIDE - Check Out This Froghemoth Preview

Based on the previous art for the monster the current rendition pales in comparison.

D&D 5E (2014) Wanting more content doesn't always equate to wanting tons of splat options so please stop.

You just have to accept you are a stranger in a strange land, if you have misgivings about 5E, or prefer a different approach. I felt the same way when I talked about preferences with 4E when Pathfinder was first released when discussing it on the Paizo forum. I guess you develop a thick skin or...

    D&D 5E (2014) Mearl's Book Design Philosophy

No, you are correct it is a mix, but with an emphasis on nostalgia as the selling point to keep previous players interested. However, since I have been playing D&D for a long time, I prefer something completely new.

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D and empowerment in the news

It is nothing new for anyone that has played an RPG. I just assume one more player has been assimilated. Resistance is futile.

    D&D 5E (2014) Why do Alchemists suck?

I can not make a meaningful comment in reference to the OP, but classes like an alchemist, artificer, or even a rogue with poisons, have to be kept in check. Otherwise, they can just stock pile resources in their specialty to wreak havoc on whatever balance exists between other classes.

D&D 5E (2014) Drawbacks to Increasing Monster AC Across the Board?

I am more about consistency, so if everything is easy to hit, then every spell should be easy to save, and every skill roll should be reasonable to make. Once you have that baseline, then it is incumbent on the DM to mix things up, as that adds challenge and excitement to the game. Hit points...

    D&D 5E (2014) Mearl's Book Design Philosophy

I will be convinced they are telling stories in a new way, when they actually write stories in a new way, without relying on the nostalgia factor. But I do not believe they are willing to take the risk, since 5E is intended to tug at the heart strings of people that have played before. For new...
