    D&D 5E (2014) is a Fighter/cleric etc less powerful using a shield

I would view it from a choice perspective. A fighter is more impaired on what choices they can make when deciding to use a shield, or other tactics each round, where a cleric can continue to operate as is. So in that regards, the fighter class should have more tactical choices in regards to...

D&D 5E (2014) Guns in your world, and in mine!

I guess that is why you see ranged weapons rule the day over melee in modern terms. At some point, armor becomes obsolete until new materials or applications are invented. It would break my verisimilitude if something did not change in regards to even fantasy expectations when firearms are included.

D&D 5E (2014) Magic Items, and what it says about the editions

There has always been a selling point to D&D as a high fantasy setting, which includes a lot of magic. The vancian system itself is based on gaining very powerful magic that can alter reality. Or you can look at a setting like Forgotten Realms, which is only surpassed by Eberron in the amount of...

D&D 5E (2014) Magic Missile vs. Mirror Image

The caster must select the target to be autohit, so with mirror image it is not clear where a target is in any instance in time, so I would just roll to see what image or real target is hit.

D&D 5E (2014) Magic Items, and what it says about the editions

Every version of D&D has problems with overabundance of magic, but 4E was the first version to try to equalize the playing field, regardless of magic. That speaks volumes for what I want in an RPG. With that stated, there are alot of problems with 4E versus the other editions, so I am not...

D&D 5E (2014) hypothetical - a giant capturing downed pc's while rest of party fights on? rule for this

I did not make the assertion about character taking giants away, but there are rules that would cover it and make it harder.

    D&D 5E (2014) Dealing with a Heavily Armored Paladin?

Destroy the rest of the party, while the paladin watches? You can only do so much as a single character. As a DM, you will learn over time what combinations creates trouble in regards to magic items, or spells with casting classes.

D&D 5E (2014) hypothetical - a giant capturing downed pc's while rest of party fights on? rule for this

I tend to agree with Plaguescarred in reference to keeping things consistent, so whatever the giants, monster and/or NPC does should be treated like a player character doing the same thing. I would not create a shortcut to bypass any player interaction whenever possible. As a player I would...

D&D 5E (2014) One of the biggest problems with WoTC's vision of published adventures

I agree the problem is not the length of the adventure, as most DMs have methods to deal with it, but more importantly when it WOTC going to do something different versus another re-hash of adventures that have already been done. In that sense, we really are living in the past.

D&D 5E (2014) What are the best ways to conceal an entrance/door with or without magic?

You could treat magic as physics, where once a portal or physical property is established it can not longer be detected as magic. For example, using mirrors as a portal when one mirror is reflected against an opposite mirror. An alignment of objects like Stonehenge, or considering modern...

D&D 5E (2014) Do NPCs in your game have PHB classes?

I agree with a more abstract interpretation of hit points, but I am not going to convince someone else their viewpoint is wrong based on the abstract nature of hit points. A lot of things fall apart when you dig into the concept. That is the price you pay for a simple concept that can represent...

D&D 5E (2014) Do NPCs in your game have PHB classes?

Regardless of the edition, I have viewed it as time versus effort. It is worth the time to invest in a NPC, by using a class, when presenting the ultimate challenge to the party. But to do it all the time will lead to ultimate burnout as a DM, unless that is the reason you enjoy the game...

D&D 5E (2014) So... what happened during the playtests?

I was on the fence about including 3E, because 3.5 had much more complexity or choices.

Latest D&D Survey Says "More Feats, Please!"; Plus New Survey About DMs Guild, Monster Hunter, Inqui

I would agree with your point if the option for a simple or complex path existed in the game for any class. Otherwise, you run the risk of your favorite class being too simple or complex. Hell, I would even take a basic game of simple classes and an advanced with complex. Then at that point the...

New issue of Dragon+ (April '16)

Then WOTC should not continue the impression that is the successor. They should have given it a new name. Regardless, I do not find much value in it.

D&D 5E (2014) So... what happened during the playtests?

Damage on a miss is misplaced wording of a valid concept, the correct concept is automatic damage. The line to walk is to limit it to higher levels for spells or any other ability. It demonstrates a high level of skill. However, the focus of 5E was to bring back old players (1e/2e/3e), so early...

Latest D&D Survey Says "More Feats, Please!"; Plus New Survey About DMs Guild, Monster Hunter, Inqui

Feats are the only hope to expand martial ability, similar to spells for casters. I would have preferred 5E implemented maneuvers for martial classes, then you would have specific mechanisms in class (maneuvers/spells) and another mechanism outside of class, e.g. feats.

D&D 5E (2014) Why is "Frost Brand" rarer than "Flame Tongue"?

Because 5E is simple and the developers did not spend alot of time on magical item creation rules. It will be up to the DM to make whatever sense they want out of it.

    D&D 5E (2014) Noticing a magic item

Understood. Magic items have to exist for a reason along the same lines as mundane items. I just don't go out of my way to hide the intent or reason, unless it is by intention, e.g. multiple properties or powers that must be learned. I figured everyone is just commenting on how they deal with...

D&D 5E (2014) Is it houseruling to let a torch set fire to things?

You may find that 99 percent of us house rule the same way based on real world physics, but it does not change the principle of what is defined or undefined. It is just a common ruling.
