D&D Goes to Work Part II: Professional Game Masters

I would not pay for a DM, but I would be more than happy for someone to pay me to DM :) But what I may pay for is an adventure writer where I could throw out some ideas and they create the monsters/maps/challenges. Call it a custom adventure. At least I know what I am getting.

D&D 5E (2014) How often should a party be rewarded?

It will depend on the players at the table. But I would also watch the gap between casters and martial characters, and act accordingly. If you are stingy with magic items then you should be stingy with how casters gain new spells.

D&D 5E (2014) [Rise of Tiamat - spoilerish] A Black Dragon and a Red Dragon enter into a bar...

The Black Dragon Khisanth and Red Dragon Ember in Dragonlance. Just play the entire series.

D&D 5E (2014) [POLL] What drives your inspiration behind char gen?

I agree. Creating a character is a collage of everything in the poll. They all add to the process of what eventually ends up on the piece of paper. And as you create more characters the process gets refined based on your experience. Eventually you will become a master of creating characters.

    D&D 5E (2014) Paladins in SCAG are all good-aligned?

I guess if we get into an inclusiveness versus exclusiveness argument on this thread, at least alignments can be added back in without much fuss. I don't have the DM guide, but it would be a good optional rule. However, 5E is heavily biased towards 2E/3E but willfully steps away from 4E options...

D&D 5E (2014) Signs that you've been adventuring too long

After completing your wizard tower and creating a summer home in the seven heavens you decide your offspring should not lead such a complicated life, so you setup a fighter school.

D&D 5E (2014) How cognizant are you of the rules of the game?

I believe it comes down to two choices - you like the game for the challenge, or you like the game because of the social aspect. You may go back and forth with different RPGs, rule sets, etc. to get there. Some may be 50/50, others 10/90, but hopefully we all become aware of the sweet spot and...

    D&D 5E (2014) What's a Warlord? Never heard of this class before.

It is only absurd on your part because you want to make it a warlord only problem. But any intent on useful discourse is wasted at this point because you have no interest in the class.

    D&D 5E (2014) What's a Warlord? Never heard of this class before.

That is already in the game since the player or character should have the choice to accept the benefit of any type of aid whether the source is healing, skill, item, advice or spell in general. And if the game does not treat aid or beneficial effects consistently then it is not the fault of one...

D&D 5E (2014) Weak monsters that terrify you

Any creature with sub-systems that are not covered by the standard class abilities (like intellect devourers). There is no way the party can compete, including legendary actions. Or a mob.

WotC's Chris Perkins Talks About... Everything! Upcoming Storylines, Products, Staffing, Other World

The biggest beef with 4E (including monsters) was going against the norm or not being classic enough, which is an entirely different argument versus just wanting more. If 5E sales figures indicate at least new players continue to buy the game, then the majority will want more content with 5E. As...

    D&D 5E (2014) Treasure Ammunition Doubt

I agree the DM can make magic whatever they want and it applied to any edition. But I preferred systems that actually attempted to explain how magic items are created and give some basis for why item A is more powerful than item B. What is brilliant about 5E magic items is from the developer's...

    D&D 5E (2014) Not liking Bounded Accuracy

I believe the concept of bounded accuracy is valid for attempting to keep game mechanics more relevant over a greater span of levels, but it falls short when comparing the different sub-systems it touches when comparing AC versus skills or saves. That makes it a lot more difficult to add more...

WotC's Chris Perkins Talks About... Everything! Upcoming Storylines, Products, Staffing, Other World

I always get the feeling with these types of discussions from WOTC is they are stalling and trying to maintain interest so players believe they are doing something to fill the gap between releases. I guess it is like throwing darts on the wall while we wait. That is why you see inconsistencies...

D&D 5E (2014) Beyond the book: new ways to represent a wizard's spells known

I tend to use a variety of spell books, whether it is crystals, runes on an object, tattoos, etc. Spells known is pretty abstract, just like how many times a fighter can swing a sword. So I honestly never saw the value in changing it to a representation in the physical world. I have a hard...

D&D 5E (2014) 5th edition Ranger: Why does every class have to have it's own schtick?

The overall problem is 5E had set in stone the amount of classes they wanted to represent, and everything else would be represented by a subclass. There is no way the developers can predict what players want so it was an unnecessary restraint. The fighter and ranger would be better represented...

    D&D 5E (2014) Magic items and identify

I tend to agree. It will benefit the DM to have a purpose for each magic item, and probably reserve specific use or command words to very powerful items. Offer clues as much as possible on how an item may be used. And even under those circumstances I usually create my own magic items with common...

    D&D 5E (2014) Treasure Ammunition Doubt

In relative power to other magic items, single ammunition should appear more frequently and more commonly in the table. But from a common sense perspective ammunition found should be random, unless it has a very specific purpose like an arrow of dragon slaying. That starts get into a similar...

D&D 5E (2014) Settings played in D&D: cause or effect?

I had hoped if they were all gung ho about FR that they would release a version that predates all the existing ones, ala FR in the very beginning. It was a tidy solution to maintaining whatever future timeline you wanted including 4E. It also gave everyone something new.

    D&D 5E (2014) 5th Edition Intelligence

Just like there is a definite Strength check in the game for heavy lifting, there should be the appropriate Intelligence check in the game for mental lifting. That is one advantage a skill based game like GURPs has over D&D.
