[WIR] The Lord of the Rings Trilogy

That's immaterial here. There's no return of a ringwraith in Lothlorien. It's Gollum snuffling around the trees having picked up the Fellowship's trail in Moria.

    Today I learned +

Yeah, that was pretty typical. When my dad was a kid, he went to a one-room school in a rural township where the nearby farms were all on a party line. Everyone overheard the call reporting when his older sister (9 years older) had her first daughter and welcomed him to class by calling him...

[WIR] The Lord of the Rings Trilogy

At this point, he's already contended with the balrog - he just doesn't yet know what it is. It wasn't orcs or trolls that burst through the spell he was using to secure the door while his companions fled. That's why he's so tired. He's not really on the same level as the rest of the company -...

    D&D 5E (2024) A critical analysis of 2024's revised classes

I think calling design "lazy" is a fairly lazy criticism. The critic is looking at something they thought needed more time and work than it got (or was able to get) and then jumping to a pejorative comment on the nature of the design - which naturally falls on the designers/developers themselves...

EN World What you thought a thread title said.

What makes love actually matter to the players? Well, it's a pretty decent movie. I mean, my wife likes it enough to watch it every Xmas season.

What makes setting lore "actually matter" to the players?

As I see it, that doesn't make it not a trade-off. You like tactical play, you trade that as a significant focus in the game for an opportunity to improve the game for K's benefit when they're in the game. You defer tactical play to another group for play with K. Trade-off isn't a dirty word or...

What makes setting lore "actually matter" to the players?

Do you always get exactly what you want out of a game like that? Or do you sometimes ease off on some of your preferences because you know other players don't favor them the way you do? Do you ever come up with an idea but adjust it for someone else's sensibilities? That's the trade-off (or I'd...

D&D General A Rant: DMing is not hard.

I think it's highly likely to be the case. Sometimes you just need to have experience with the perspective on the other side of the GM's screen. Similarly, having some GM experience is going to enable someone to be a better player.

Will there ever be new editions of the major systems?

I can understand the design and maintenance incentives they might have had by using a unified house system, but this was an extremely disappointing decision by GDW in my opinion. Moreover, Traveller had always gotten criticism for militarism since most adventurer characters are...

What was your 1st RPG and what was your favourite campaign about or best memory?

First RPG was Holmes Basic D&D. Played it once as a solo player with a party of 6 PCs. One survived. Then I got roped into DMing out of a mix of the first Redbox Basic and AD&D. Those PCs kept going a LONG while - from about 1982 to 1996 (on and off play). Favorite campaign - that's harder to...

D&D General A Rant: DMing is not hard.

Oh, good god, no. People make mistakes and learn from them. There's no point in retconning if you're long past that moment. Even Advanced Squad Leader incorporates this rule - once you've moved on, the mistake stands.
