Shadow of the Demon Lord - your analysis?

That's what I thought also. I run 2 hour sessions and most adventures are 2-3 2 hour sessions. And then there's roleplaying downtime between adventures. So we've gotten a fair few sessions out of a campaign

Shadow of the Demon Lord - your analysis?

Also @eyeheartawk can you give me the quote where the author doesn't recommend you play more than 12 sessions? He designed the game to be finished in 11 sessions for people strapped for time (to make a finishable campaign arc), but I don't remember him ever saying he doesn't recommend playing...

Shadow of the Demon Lord - your analysis?

I've run a 2 year campaign in it, so I don't know what the issues of more than 12 sessions is being quoted above. System is designed for a level each adventure, but you don't have to. And you can have roleplay between adventures. I had locations interesting enough that PCs wanted to explore and...

Shadow of the Demon Lord - your analysis?

It's come up a few times but after using it for years it's still the modularity of the classes and spell schools that make it great for me. I love using NPc spellcasters because of the thematic schools. I could make a skald with song and battle tradition at the drop of a hat. Or a runic...

Shadow of the Demon Lord - your analysis?

As long as you don't then see strength and dexterity as combat attributes because they're used for other things. I don't see value in trying to compare game stats to real world stats. In the game experience itself i have seen it allows smart players and players for a forceful personality both...

Shadow of the Demon Lord - your analysis?

Yeah that's fair. I have a number of other systems in my pile to run all because they hit different needs. The witcher is one i'm hoping to run which scratches the skill itch for me.

Shadow of the Demon Lord - your analysis?

You're entitled to your opinions, but it has 2 social attributes, INT and WILL. It's just not very clearly laid out in the book.

Shadow of the Demon Lord - your analysis?

It's all personal preference i guess. I find the 4 attributes WAY better balanced than 5e. Each one is useful to everyone. Strength defines what weapons and armour you can use effectively. It also functions as a saving throw for what would be STR and CON in 5e. Agility is DEX just less...

Shadow of the Demon Lord - your analysis?

Shadow of the Demon Lord is my fantasy RPG of choice and i've been using it for near on 3 years as it does most things I want. There's a lot of cleverness in the design and a surprising amount of depth that isn't apparent at first. The modularity is such a great feature and a huge thing for me...

    D&D 5E (2014) (+) Social Mechanics Optional Modules

I've toyed around with a basic system i've yet to put into practice. Basically there are 7 levels of attitude towards the PCs a la reaction rolls (neutral and three negative and three positive). Each of these attitudes allow you to ask for certain things. So neutral might mean you can ask for...

D&D General Preparing Towns in a Sandbox

Sometimes i'll use or reuse towns from other modules as mentioned. If i do create from scratch the first thing i do is write down the towns economic reason. I do this before name. Then everything falls from that. So for example if you know the areas around are rich with woods heading towards...

Roll20 Now Has 10 Million Users

I've bought foundry as i wanted to usd their dynamic lighting, animated maps and location based sounds, but the support for the systems I run are too absent, and I'm not willing to put in the hours creating class abilities, monsters and the like just to use for a single session or so. Roll20...

    Souls-like Stamina and Tactical Play

I was tempted for a short while to try PF2e because of the action point economy, but then they integrated about 10 million feats into the core structure. Sounds like I should look at zweihander.

Is the 5e adv/disadvantage mechanic perfect?

It's one of the things i like about it actually - it increases reliability, not range. I would have liked 5e to have a clear set of situations that give advantage/disadvantage and others that give modifiers. My dream hack uses proficiency as the number of d20's you roll (so more proficient =...

Is the 5e adv/disadvantage mechanic perfect?

I think if you allow double disadvantagd and double advantage (roll 3d20 and keep lowest/highest), you can solve the major bonus & penalty issue at least. I think a lot of 5e came about not because it was perfect, but it was good enough for most people. It's really only the special people like...

    D&D 5E (2014) DARK SOULS' New 5E Mechanics

Problem is that's exactly what they did in the board game which made it stretch out to 5+ hours and why many people hated it

    Souls-like Stamina and Tactical Play

So steamforged are money grabbing hacks to put it bluntly. They have a history of getting popular IP's and making terrible board game rules that show they don't understand what they are adapting. I expect this RPG is going to be the same. And position is my example of that. It doesn't strike...

Is the 5e adv/disadvantage mechanic perfect?

Sorry not my experience at all. Most people are far quicker at seeing which number is higher on 2 d20s than finding the right modifier on their sheet to add, especially when you have a str check, and athletics check and a str saving throw. I suspect that was the case for WotC playtests as well...
