I think it depends upon how fun you want to make the play experience. You want to encourage the front line to be the front line and that means the risk of going to 0 HP. You also want to encourage the second line to do their bit, which includes healing the front line. So I think you want to...
This is pretty much what the Borderlands games do and it works really well. I dislike applying levels of Exhaustion as they result in a death spiral.
I dislike your idea of being Slowed afterwards, however, as that too looks like it could result in a death spiral. To prevent whack-a-mole...
That's not the sort of thing I'm asking after. Rather, starting play as a 1st level PC Wizard / Fighter / Rogue / Cleric / whatever with all stats 10 + racial mods.
So why have the feat? If you're impinging on the feat then it's too good to give for free. This is something that feels like it should be an aura for a paladin or a manoeuvre for a battlemaster.
The idea: everyone starts with a 10 in all their stats. Now apply racial modifiers (variant human allowed). That's your starting PC. Then pick class, skills, background, etc. As you gain levels you may pick feats or stat increases as normal. How about starting with 11 in all stats?
Has anyone...
Way back when I pointed out in another thread that a prime use for Action Surge was extra movement, notably running away, and this was pooh-poohed by those insisting that Action Surge had to be used for fighting. So yes, I think you're right.
Has anyone mentioned that Subtle Spell doesn't stop the need for material components or foci? If you need them you can be seen using them in the casting of the spell.
Has anyone clarified if Dread Counterspell works against spells from items? E.g. a Ring of Spell Storing or a Ring of Three Wishes.
If I were to do this I would remove stat bumps entirely. Humans would get a free choice of two feats plus skills and other races would get their racial abilities plus one feat from a race-specific list. For an example, a dwarf might choose from Durable, Tough, and Alert; whereas an elf might...
I would like to see increased use of the Proficiency Bonus as a stat modifier substitute. For example, from my own revised Fighter:
(1st level) Defensive Bonus: your base Armour Class can become 10 + Armour + Defensive Bonus. Your Defensive Bonus is the lower of your Proficiency Bonus or your...
Rather than the Sorcerer class, how about reflavouring the Monk class? Use Magic Initiate to get some cantrips if you don't want to take a level of Sorcerer.
Damage auras can be used to warn PCs that this is a serious challenge, maybe one beyond them. For instance if you have the critter wade through mooks killing them all it gives the PCs a round or two to prepare - or flee.
It's different. Both the spear and the javelin have the thrown property; sling bullets and arrows do not. (Actually, I think the bow and sling should key off Str, not Dex, but that's for another thread.)
