D&D General Poll: How many Role Playing Games do you play besides D&D?

We have an ongoing Pathfinder 2.0, Shadowrun 6 and D&D 5 campaign, and we're going to launch a Hexxen 2. Edition campaign soon. We've played other systems before, and I hope to play other games in the future, too. And I've played a lot more over the years, of course, some more frequently...

    D&D 5E (2014) How To Make High Level 5E Work.For You +

I think that is an interesting idea. But in general, it might be worth considering that a high level campaign might not need to delve into the usual save-the-world stuff, but could be about alter-the-world-fundamentally stuff. If you assume that high level characters are really rare, let the...

    D&D 5E (2014) How To Make High Level 5E Work.For You +

Generally, something I needed to learn. Close up some plot lines in your campaign at some point, and that includes getting to the finale. Don't become the George Martin of your own campaign! ;)

Spoilers Star Wars: Andor season 2

I really like all these trailers that SWFT has been doing with Andor. Most recent one: They had me at the first line, bascially. The show has so many powerful quotes. I guess I love this show more than it ever could do wrong...

D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

Pun pun was white room, I am fairly certain we did Scry and Fry in some campaigns. And the DMG also contained a wealth by level rules and treasure guidelines, IIRC, and of course the DM can do whatever, including not handing out body-slot fitting magic items (though the default magic items in...

D&D 5E (2024) Circle Casting is gonna break a lot of games

When martials close their eyes, they see exactly what they deserve over the casters. "Circle Fighting". The warriors of the forgotten realms have mastered the secretes of fighting, achieving combat prowess by cooperation beyond what humans might have thought possible. Multiple...

D&D General Has Tiny Hut actually affected your game? Or has it otherwise mattered?

Force fields also sound like something out of Star Trek*. Wizards conjuring houses sounds like proper magic. *) mind you, Star Trek often is magic. I mean, you can probably place 3 pattern enhancers, reverse the polarity on your tricorder, and you got a force field. Then you set your phaser to...

D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

I don't know, there were a lot of spells with low utility or combat ability, it would certainly be possible to screw yourself over. Especially at low levels when you don't have many spells known. 3E had built-in stuff that rewarded system mastery like Toughness as trap feat, but I don't think...

    D&D 5E (2014) How To Make High Level 5E Work.For You +

This is really a tip for almost any game I've played. If your NPCs have too many abilities, you are going to forget some of them. Keep it simple and have some helpful pointers on when to use them. I think especially stuff that happens every turn like regeneration/fast healing can be easy to...

    D&D 5E (2024) Tuning big single creatures into multi-part-creatures.

I guess it wouldn#t go smoothly with every spell and power, but maybe the rule could simply be: If you cast a spell that targets a creature (regardless of size) and teleports or banishes it, the target makes a single save. If it fails, the caster must concentrate an additional turn for each...

D&D General Has Tiny Hut actually affected your game? Or has it otherwise mattered?

An intersting idea - why does the force cage spell exist, but not just a "summon cage" spell? Why not just create a cage, and cagey things can be done with it. At least have a spell for lower level that's just a cage ,and something higher level as force cage, once you start encountering beings...

D&D General Has Tiny Hut actually affected your game? Or has it otherwise mattered?

What would you do as a player if you find a Tiny Hut near a village that was recently raided? I think I would try to observe. Search for tracks around it. I would spend some time investigating to figure out what I got here. Once I have gathered some information, I'd make a decision, probably...

D&D General Who put all this Sci-Fi in my soup!?

Wonder if the writers for Reign of Fire saw that cover. ;) There was a movie about an aircraft carrier being displaced to a time shortly before the attack on Pearl Harbor, and once they realized were and when they were, they were considering intervening with their modern fighter jets. Was it...

D&D General Has Tiny Hut actually affected your game? Or has it otherwise mattered?

But since they are not a hive-mind, they don't know exactly how many opponents they are dealing with. They only know someone intruded and killed a bunch of their guys, and can't be found right now. They don't know if the opposition is a generoic heroic adventuring party of 3-5 people, or a...

    D&D 5E (2024) Tuning big single creatures into multi-part-creatures.

I could see that AoE effects can indeed hit all parts, but they inflict only half damage. So if you have 3 or 4 parts, AoEs are still in sum more useful than not using AoEs, and they would be better than if it was just a single enemy. But also not excessively so.

D&D General Has Tiny Hut actually affected your game? Or has it otherwise mattered?

Well, they are going to look for hints of activity, what kind of opposition to expect, what kind of patrol or watches exist. They don't know if the raiding party into their base was acting on its own, the exact composition might be unclear and they don't know if they have any support previously...

D&D General The thunder blessing - 2 generations later

I don't remember this, sounds like a cool story idea. Is your assumption we're basically 50 years after the "boomer" phase so we get a generational setup more like real-world demographics, or do you want to spend more time on a more classic demographic pyramid, with more young than old. In the...

D&D General Has Tiny Hut actually affected your game? Or has it otherwise mattered?

The patrol still needs to figure out what they are seeing, they can't just go back: "We saw something we couldn't identify and didn't bother to check more, let's assemble our strike force and head out". So as they investigate what they found, and maybe try their Arcana checks or whatever, the...

D&D General Has Tiny Hut actually affected your game? Or has it otherwise mattered?

No, there is a difference. Because now it's just a patrol finding them and investigating what they found: They probably want to report back soon, but they can't decide to launch an attack on people in their sleeping bag. So the players have a bit of time to prepare and can take out the patrol...
