It annoyed me to no end that there was no percentile intelligence, wisdom or dexterity for other classes to access. Percentile strength was in general a mistake, but it's one they could have fixed as you said. They just didn't because leaving bad ideas fester for the sake of backwards compatibility isn't something WotC invented in 2024...

Yes. Bards and druids both got moved to simple weapons only, unless you pick a feature or subclass that gives you all martial weapons. Druid lost scimitar (which was goofy but iconic) but bards lost a lot of one handed weapons like longsword, rapiers and whips which fit the bard look so well...

Correct. The 2e PHB had them all go to 25, and I don't remember if 1e had it in the PHB or UA.

Unfortunately, that's because Mr Gygax put them in the AD&D PHB and aside from an attempt to remove them in 2e (which resulted in three different attempts to restore them) they've been grandfathered in.
