    Supermonsters: Making Monsters Truly Dangerous

This. Being subtle with encounters is the best way to keep the player's guessing. Also, description, it's super easy as the DM to just reskin a normal monster to make it appear as something else entirely, even the abilities of most monsters can be reskinned to essentially keep the same effect...

Things to establish before session one

I generally have the players get together for Session Zero. This is where everyone gets together to talk character and campaign setting. Any character creation guidelines are put on the table and are open for discussion. House-rules are discussed if there are new players, unfamiliar with how the...

    The monster you fear most

Sons of Kyuss. Zombies with little worms that turn you into one of them. Nasty. Also up there are slimes and oozes when you're not expecting it.

Help me remember/find a grognard fantasy cartoon

Did you watch all three of the Youtube videos? If not, in Part2 there is a scene about 6:49 in, that shows a bunch of orc looking guys in red caps marching by a door holding poleaxes. Sounds like what you were looking for. Edit: about 9:20 in that same video there is a scene with the redcaps up...

    Warehouse 13

WH13 is is one of my Syfy favs. I had the chance to meet Eddie and his wife Lynn at DragonCon last year. Really great guy, acts the same way in RL as he does on the show, goofing off and cutting up. When he found out that my son, who also enjoys watching the show, had a birthday that week but...

PCs who don't seem to want to meet

I don't handle hold any players, but if they choose to play their character this way then it's on them to get to where they need to be when they need to be. If the party meets and the loner is doing the loner-y thing, then I handle the party PCs and will switch over to "Maverick" every so often...

    "Oh god what is that!"

From an AD&D 1E campaign that I played in a year or two back. The DM had us up against a "Pennangalan". The first time we encountered the creature and it detached itself from the body, the DM did such a great job of describing the process that we all stared blankly at him for a couple second...

Next year, I'm back to running AD&D

I don't know if you've given it any consideration, but for that background you may want to take a look at the article for the "New" Barbarian that was put out in Dragon Magazine #148. It was a nice revision and cleanup that I think makes for a much better PC class than what was found in the UA...

D&D 5E (2014) cancelled 5e announcement at Gencon??? Anyone know anything about this?

That's precisely my point. A "hero" can't be proactive, committing a heroic act is reactive to something that has occurred. An "adventurer" can decide they want to set off to become King of a country and seek to accomplish that task. It might be an adventurous ordeal, but may not be...

D&D 5E (2014) cancelled 5e announcement at Gencon??? Anyone know anything about this?

I tend to agree, from the view point of the PCs being "heroes". As both a player and DM, I personally don't take the mindset that the PCs are "heroes" by default. I always think of the PCs as "adventurers". Heroes might be reactive, but adventurers are proactive. Adventurers can act "heroic"...

D&D 5E (2014) cancelled 5e announcement at Gencon??? Anyone know anything about this?

In the last game of 4E that I ran, quick run down of the premise of the adventure was that a very special girl was born into the world 10 years earlier. She held a very small fraction of power (the game setting was FR) which had been stolen by a lycanthrope when he stopped a ritual which would...

    Superhero RPG suggestions?

I'll throw my vote in for ICONS. I really like how it handles the genre.

Call of Cthulhu vs World of Darkness

CoC / Trail of Cthulhu for 1920s era horror. If I were going to do modern horror, it's either the base setting for nWoD (players playing normal humans vs supernatural elements), Supernatural RPG or Esoterrorists.

    Poll: Favored class & why?

Rogue: Thief I like the idea of the "go-to" guy, not to mention tackling issues through guile and wits.

    Multi-classing, yay or nay?

    Nay.

    Miniatures, yay or nay?

I like for my sessions to flow in an even pace, I don't mind having minis when they are used loosely to represent some situations taking place, but I don't want to play an RPG where minis are required or even expected for game play.

Should D&D (or any other RPG) actually attempt to be "All Things to All People"?

Well, I had a nice big post full of argument, rebuttal, and debate for you, but since the Mod dropped the hammer before I could get it posted, I'll just scrap it and say, "</shrug> Meh".

Should D&D (or any other RPG) actually attempt to be "All Things to All People"?

I was implying that WotC shot itself in the foot when it tossed aside a game system that a LOT of people still enjoy playing. The way I see it, WotC could have had the best of both worlds, but holding on to both 3.5 and what we now know as 4E, while calling both of them D&D the RPG would have...

What do you do when there's a near-TPK?

As DM I don't do anything. It's up the the remaining survivors, with whatever resources are available to them. This determines whether or not the fallen PCs are able to be recovered and revived. Otherwise, new characters are introduced and the game rolls on.

Should D&D (or any other RPG) actually attempt to be "All Things to All People"?

First off what I said was: Now, to my knowledge, the word "new" does not equate to the words "kid" nor "preteen", so I'm not sure why that would be brought up in the first place. New players, more often than not, who are interested in learning a new game are going to be checking it out at a...
