D&D Debuts Playtest for Psion Class

You got a laugh out of me for the Counterspell sign 😂 I think it would be just as easy saying Somatic components for a Psion can manifest as a hand to your temple, reaching out towards an object, or a glowing halo appearing around your head. A sidebar like this, similar to the explainer for the...

D&D Debuts Playtest for Psion Class

You misunderstand my stance here. Yes, it’s obvious that spellcasters are casting spells in the game. That’s because of the components. Verbal, Somatic, and Material components reveal a caster as casting a spell. That’s spelled out in the rules. If you remove those, like with Subtle Spell meta...

D&D Debuts Playtest for Psion Class

You thinking this and it being true about the rules aren’t the same thing. Nothing about any of those skills work with identifying a spell, which are rules laid out in Xanathar’s. In Xanathar’s, the rules clearly say people can perceive the casting of a spell only if it has a Verbal, Somatic...

D&D Debuts Playtest for Psion Class

A majority of the Material components necessary for casting Psionic spells are just a jewel or pearl or dust from a jewel or something. So it’s not that hard to flavor them into focusing crystals of the same value anyway. It’s not like you’re turning the eye of a newt into a crystal thing, it’s...

D&D Debuts Playtest for Psion Class

This also isn’t correct, as there’s even rules in Xanathar’s about how to identify a spell being cast. The target does not inherently know anything about the spell unless the spell says they know. The way characters know a spell is being cast is because of the verbal, somatic, and material...

D&D Debuts Playtest for Psion Class

Encumbrance rules are still in the 2024 PHB dude. They didn’t drop anything. If WotC dropped every rule that most people ignored, we’d be doing improve with no ruleset to speak of. Every rule gets ignored now and then. Doesn’t mean they shouldn’t exist.

D&D Debuts Playtest for Psion Class

No it can’t. If the lore is secret, the DM has no obligation to reveal it to a history check, even if they rolled a 30. History is about what your character can reasonably know. If the secret isn’t known to anyone, you can’t magically learn it through a skill check. Any DM allowing that is doing...

D&D Debuts Playtest for Psion Class

That is not how it will end up working. What will happen is everyone will spam their highest level spells, end fights quickly because everyone is throwing around multiple level 9 spells, then short rest and do it again immediately after. It isn’t self-balancing, it’s just exploitative.

D&D Debuts Playtest for Psion Class

So you’re saying you could “nova” by casting two level 9 spells, then short rest and cast them again next combat? When combats last 3 turns on average? Ya, that certainly puts a damper on the power scaling issue /s.

D&D Debuts Playtest for Psion Class

Of course I don’t, I’ve already psionically cast Suggestion so you’re already convinced 😉

D&D Debuts Playtest for Psion Class

They offered that in 2014 and removed it from 2024 because it’s hard to balance. Spellcasting is built around spell levels being available to a certain degree per adventuring day. Spell points allow you to effectively trade in a collection of low level spells to get a second 9th level, or...

D&D Debuts Playtest for Psion Class

That special feature is called spells like Command and Suggestion not having Somatic components in the first place. Psions can still cast spells that don’t have Somatic components. It’s not like Artificer where every spell they cast HAS to have Material components (their tools). So don’t...

D&D Eberron: Race for the Crab Temple Coming to PAX East

Damn, thank you for the report! Was there an Artificer in your party? If so did you catch what subclass? (Mostly wondering if Cartographer and if it was effective).

D&D 5E (2024) You Can Now Pre-order Eberron: Forge of the Artificer

The Amazon preorder page has these extra preview pages, giving some hints as to the nature of the Campaign Tool Kits (each is a full chapter and the Sharn Inquisitive one seems to be somewhat spoiled by this) as well confirming the existence of both House Agent as a generic background and a...

D&D 5E (2024) Potential other "rules expansion" books

My guess is they will just bundle Mordenkainen’s Monsters of the Multiverse with the PHB and whatever new “of Everything” book they do next year. The species in there don’t need big updates.

Dungeons & Dragons Announces Horror Subclasses Unearthed Arcana

Their habits don’t really matter here, since they announced an October book. It’s coming out in October. That plus a horror UA means it isn’t a stretch by any means to assume it’s a spooky themed book. And yes, we have gotten multiple subclasses for the same class in books many times before...

Dungeons & Dragons Announces Horror Subclasses Unearthed Arcana

What makes more sense: WotC announces a mystery October book, right during Halloween season, and releases a horror themed UA for that book because it’s a generic “Horror” book, or… WotC playtests subclasses for a 2025 and a 2026 book in the same UA that’s out in early 2025? I’d place my...
