Level Up (A5E) So. Permanency, the spell.

A gleefully evil way of using this would be to not only apply permanent curses and debuffs on a target, but also severing their attunement to their own magic items!

Level Up (A5E) So. Permanency, the spell.

Yes, single high level spell slots are a thing about 5e. Losing complete access to those spells is probably a very steep penalty, although also having a permanent 8th or 9th level spell is quite the boon. I'm not too fond of hp penalty either, because it can still be sidestepped with temporary...

Level Up (A5E) So. Permanency, the spell.

I don't like the idea of losing Con: there are magic items that set your Con score (amulet of health). You'd need to rule that this drain happens despite the magic item for the penalty to be effective, and that creates another can of worms. If the effect is not on a creature but on a position or...

Level Up (A5E) So. Permanency, the spell.

You are right, and I think it's a matter of taste as well. If magic items are also to be at a personal cost for the creator this kind of sacrifice makes sense to me. However, if this is not something you may like, one could say that the process of creating a magic item (with expensive and rare...

Level Up (A5E) So. Permanency, the spell.

This is an interesting topic! This spell is fundamental IMO for world building: in 2e it was how magic items were created in the first place! Using it to make individual spells (not magic items) permanent was probably more of a niche use. 3E allowed to have permanent buffs this way, but it did...

Level Up (A5E) Thoughts on A5E classes from your table(s)?

If we're considering drastic changes, I'm mentally toying with one set of such changes : Conditions don't get triggered by a failed save, but by exceeding a threshold. Every time you get targeted by an effect that imposes a condition, that effect builds up a meter by a certain amount, depending...

Level Up (A5E) The Cackler Warlock archetype from Planestrider's

Haven't read it yet so I'm not sure what could be valid choices, ut here's a couple of ideas that came to mind: Ludomania and erotomania could be interesting for a multiclassed Bard IMO. Intermittent Explosive Disorder could work for a berserker or a fighter (but rabies may be even more fun)...

Level Up (A5E) Reputation and class abilities

I think most sentient creatures can understand at a very primal level how a threat looks like. It can simply be due to size, growls and intimidating appearance, or something more subtle like remaining unfazed by their own threats or not "reeking of fear". The only creatures I'd consider more or...

Level Up (A5E) Why is non-magical flying so limited for PCs?

I remember ages ago there was a 3.5 supplement that was trying to make some sense of all this, and I really liked the idea behind. It took the various descriptions of monsters, rarity of magic and magic items etc, and tried to come up with plausible developments where some form of dynamic...

Level Up (A5E) Why is non-magical flying so limited for PCs?

Pretty much no sentient being should do so except in really dire circumstances. A mother bear would probably fight to the death if cubs were threatened, and most mindless undead would definitely fight until destroyed. But in the overwhelmingly vast majority of cases, this won't be a thing.

Level Up (A5E) Why is non-magical flying so limited for PCs?

This seems more of a contrieved example than a reasonable scenario to me. Anyways, it seems the discussion is getting pointless. Some want to allow flight to be a possibility and want actual mechanics and verisimilitude around it, others don't for whatever reason. It's like some people are...

Level Up (A5E) Why is non-magical flying so limited for PCs?

Exactly, I mentioned this in a previous post. It doesn't look like, but IMO this absence has significantly changed the fight dynamics from older editions. A combat now is designed to last 3 rounds. This was not implemented in a good way imo: damage for monsters is often too high and their HPs...

Level Up (A5E) Why is non-magical flying so limited for PCs?

These two sentences summarize the kind of games I prefer to run. Instead of "punishing" players because they built strong characters and trying to constantly come up with ways to directly counteract them, I'd rather they seeked challenge by themselves. Shooting land animals while flying isn't...

Level Up (A5E) Why is non-magical flying so limited for PCs?

You know I had the idea to pitch some mechanics but ultimately didn't manage. If this kind of thing won't be already published by then I'm gonna pitch it for sure ;)

Level Up (A5E) Why is non-magical flying so limited for PCs?

I mean, this thread was specifically posted in LU, which should be about "Advanced" 5e. To me it being "advanced" has nothing to do with having a gazillion archetypes, spells or maneuvers and everything to do about integrated systems and mechanics. 5e has nothing for vehicles, stronghold...

Level Up (A5E) Why is non-magical flying so limited for PCs?

I like some form of verisimilitude and consistency in a setting and a ruleset. Flight can be profoundly transformational to both. I prefer to consider what kind of tactics can be employed by most creatures and societies to both take advantage of it and to protect themselves against it. Getting...

Level Up (A5E) Why is non-magical flying so limited for PCs?

Mechanics idea: the basic flight endurance is equal to x time con score (hours) Larger creatures, heavy burden (armor as well) significantly increase how quickly the endurance drains. Once endurance is below a certain threshold one risks getting fatigue levels. Short rests allow for partial recover

Level Up (A5E) Why is non-magical flying so limited for PCs?

Your points 1-3 make for excellent "patches" if one is concerned with at will, permanent flight. I do like to have a systemic view, though, so I'd like many of these considerations to apply to monsters and the campaign in general. Point 3 would mean that many big flying creatures can do so only...
