Level Up (A5E) You don't hate exploration, you hate survival

XPs are actually just hidden milestones: each encounter is per se is seen as a milestone, and the progression itself of character is measured in terms of encounters required. It's all plainly there. The fact that someone decides not to follow the largely arbitrary and inconsistent guidelines...

Level Up (A5E) You don't hate exploration, you hate survival

Milestones aren't about "fairness", they are just a way to set the pace and progress of the PCs vs the rest of the story and world. If "fairness" is a concern, I'd point out at how encounters are built waaay before lamenting that with milestones I'm not leveling up fast enough... I noticed...

Level Up (A5E) You don't hate exploration, you hate survival

This seems more of a table- or people-you-play-with problem, more than about the solution itself. I used it in pretty much all of the campaigns I DM'd from 3rd edition onwards, from low to high levels, and it always worked. I've been playing for a very long time with my closest friends, so...

Level Up (A5E) You don't hate exploration, you hate survival

In a system like D&D, IMO the simplest and most effective solution is to ignore XP and go for milestones, but that's a taboo for most people. IMO XP make sense in level-less (and probably class-less) games, which also tend to have more unified systems instead of specific designs for each class...

Level Up (A5E) Monstrous Menagerie II: Hordes & Heroes

You don't even know what mansplaning is, do you?

Level Up (A5E) Monstrous Menagerie II: Hordes & Heroes

This has nothing to do with O5.5e. It's for Level Up. Besides, LU's monster math and design seems much better than O5e's.

Level Up (A5E) Warlock Pact Weapon + Wand of the Warmage

You're right, I was focusing on the weapon attack part, not on the Eldritch blast part (which is the main point of the OP). I sincerely dislike this kind of stacking and all kinds of flat modifiers to attack rolls not coming from the use of magic items like this, especially the ranger's class...

Level Up (A5E) Thoughts on A5E classes from your table(s)?

What about simply having more difficult to reach enemies? Stunning assault is only useful for melee attacks.

Level Up (A5E) Warlock Pact Weapon + Wand of the Warmage

I'd say maybe, but it's a stretch, for a couple of reasons Note the "while you wield your pact weapon". It seems that you'd lose proficiency and also you wouldn't be able to use your spellcasting ability if you're not wielding it. The second part comes from the "with it", so you'd need to use...

Level Up (A5E) Herald "Channel Divinity" Clarification

I'd rephrase your point 3. There's no "correct" number of short rests per long rest, but the limitation is there in place to avoid players regaining too many 3rd level spell slots. Keep in mind that with a 3rd level spell slot the Herald gains 6 Exertion Points, which last until a long rest is...

Level Up (A5E) Can you use a bonus action when surprised?

Specific beats general, I'd say. IMO a bonus action IS an action, but can only be taken when specific conditions apply.

Level Up (A5E) Can you use a bonus action when surprised?

You're right, part of the 3.5 lingo is still in my brain! I honestly don't understand why 5e moved away from the tag system that was widely adopted in 3/3.5. It made things so well organized and easy to follow.

Level Up (A5E) Can you use a bonus action when surprised?

It doesn't say unable to take a standard action, but an action. A bonus action is an action, so I agree with Morrus and would go for no.

Gate Pass Gazette New Class Features Poll

Well, the berserker is not resistant to all kinds of damages, at least not right off the bat. Being hit and damaged it always risky and taxing, not sustainable in the long term. Retaliation to be useful requires the berserker to go in melee against the target, and mobile targets would require...

Gate Pass Gazette New Class Features Poll

I agree with you that as it is one of the class's main features is very luck dependent. In part this can be mitigated by party tactics, the right selection of weapons, other maneuvers etc, but in this regard the class seems to be designed to appeal more to the "gambler" type of players. I also...

Gate Pass Gazette New Class Features Poll

Rage would be challenging, but replacing Furious Critical with something else wouldn't, as it interacts mostly with itself and the weapons. The point is that IMO rage is fine and should be the main feature of the berserker, but doing big crits should be something that all martial focused...

Gate Pass Gazette New Class Features Poll

Wasn't there a poll for alternate class features? I don't know if there are policies regarding what articles in GPG can do, but having entirely different branches of class features seems to me a more powerful approach to modify classes than adding yet another archetype

Level Up (A5E) A Leveled-Up Bestiary: Volume Two

I'll try not to take this monster entry personal... :P Btw, this reminds me of another very cool, magic draining 2e monster: the Nishruu!

Level Up (A5E) A Leveled-Up Bestiary: Volume Two

Seems more or less the approach I'd have used. I'm asking because there's plenty of very cool and dangerous 2e monsters that were never ported to 5e, and sometimes adapting them can be tricky because the two editions can differ quite a bit in the progression of character's HP and monster damage...
