D&D General Blending individual checks into group checks

Checks benefit from consequences and time pressures, etc., but I think this misses the point. Players often see an opportunity to throw more dice at a problem, or throwing their best modifiers at it in order to succeed. We can blame this on the Dungeon Masters poor design choices (and frankly...

    D&D 5E (2014) Is Point Buy Balanced?

This is why I focus on "dump" scores rather than low scores.

    D&D 5E (2014) Is Point Buy Balanced?

This is true, they both have the same problem. But we don't talk about Flight Club here.° Point Buy tacitly promises us that we can make whatever Character we want by allowing us full control over Score placement. But that promise falls short when we are forced to "dump" lower and lower Scores...

D&D General Blending individual checks into group checks

I'm interested in reining-in the Chimera. I see this sometimes with skills like Deception and Persuasion. For instance when one character is quite clearly having a conversation with a non player character and we determine that Deception is being employed so we call for a check. They fail and the...

D&D General Blending individual checks into group checks

You bring up a good point, though. "Blended" is a good choice of words because this "blurs" the line between what is accomplished by the individual and what is accomplished by the group. Opening a door may not be the best thing for a group check; maybe lifting a portcullis would be better...

D&D General Blending individual checks into group checks

I like the blended group check. Maybe after the second person tries and fails you declare that this is now a group check and we have two failures.

D&D General Blending individual checks into group checks

This is what I call "Walking the Chimaera", because, as a Dungeon Master, it feels like the party is one body with many heads. I would suggest noise, loud noise that attracts monsters for each failed attempt. If that's not going to help the situation then just allow them to beach the door. I...

    D&D 5E (2014) Is Point Buy Balanced?

I'm not sure what balance is but some have suggested in this thread that the Standard Array is the most balanced. I think this is simply because there is only one set of scores to "choose" from. "It seems like the thing that brings them the balance is the fact that modifiers are so small."...

    D&D 5E (2014) Is Point Buy Balanced?

Well, we're talking past each other here so let's clear that up. First, I don't advocate for the Classic method. Random characters generated through the Classic method are fun to make and play, but we have to be willing to relinquish our agency as Players in this part of the game. I like it...

    D&D 5E (2014) Is Point Buy Balanced?

"...in the place it will least matter..." Yeah, I agree. It's like dumping the trash; we're dumping the low score somewhere we can forget about it. Because we're dumping it in an Ability that will least matter, that's what makes it a dump score rather than simply a low score. One way to avoid...

    D&D 5E (2014) Is Point Buy Balanced?

Thank you for this effort. As long as we can agree on the extrapolation then we can compare all of the arrays. Another way to compare them, independent of extrapolation, is comparing total modifiers. That would mean some of the 65 possible 27-point arrays are lesser than others.

    D&D 5E (2014) Is Point Buy Balanced?

For the record I would allow you to lower your Wisdom score to anything less than what you rolled. But your not getting anything for it. I detest dump scores.° ° Low scores are not dump scores. Dump scores are scores that are low in order to make other scores high.

D&D General What character sheets do you use and what do you put on them?

Interesting doodles. You should see a doctor about that. Maybe a priest.

It's random enough to make people complain about it. 🙃

You can test your random numbers for bias by generating 10,000 of them, then the average should be 3.5.

    D&D 5E (2014) Is Point Buy Balanced?

I don't love it, but I don't hate it either. This reduces the landscape of possible score arrays from 54,264 to 12,232. A reduction in diversity of 42,032 but I can live with 12,000 arrays. I rolled up the base scores for three Monks: Monk A, equivalent to 25 points (Str 10, Dex 15, Con 14...

D&D General What character sheets do you use and what do you put on them?

I use the official sheet from the Players Handbook. I don't put the full text of features and traits on the sheet, just range, saves, effects, etc. I also clearly indicate what is a bonus action and what is a reaction. I also make a list of bonus and reactions in the combat box. I also divide...

D&D General How Did You Generate Your Most Recent Character's Stats?

I really love character generation methods. Particularly ones that leave it out of our control to some extent. It's a process of discovery, like watching an unknown seed grow to see what blooms. Here I present a really beautiful one. The Harrow Character Generation method was created by a user...
