    D&D 5E (2014) Is Point Buy Balanced?

Yes, I agree. Everybody has an equal opportunity. However I'm curious if it really leads to balanced outcomes. I mean will my character by handicapped if I choose the Balanced Array (13, 13, 13, 12, 12, 12)?

    D&D 5E (2014) Is Point Buy Balanced?

There was a discussion like this about a decade ago on the Paizo fora. It was fun! We collected a maddening array of different ability score generation methods and tried to compare them against each other. I collected about 80 point buy arrays from the 'wild' to get a sense of what limited set...

    D&D 5E (2014) Is Point Buy Balanced?

Hmmm, maybe we could analyse all the permutations of the Standard Array and see how they effect things. Does anybody know how many permutations of six values there are? Is it 6^6. That seems like a lot.

    D&D 5E (2014) Is Point Buy Balanced?

I've started comparing 27 point buy arrays by analyzing how they impact Skills. It might be hard to extrapolate the effectiveness of an array overall, but Skills are only one step away from the Ability Scores. I've started with the three basic ones: Standard (15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8), Balanced...

    D&D 5E (2014) Is Point Buy Balanced?

Yeah, that's fair. What could we say? How about this, "Is Point Buy Balanced?"

    D&D 5E (2014) Is Point Buy Balanced?

Yeah, the Standard Array is a Point Buy set of scores.

    D&D 5E (2014) Is Point Buy Balanced?

Is Point Buy Balanced? I'm not asking if Point Buy is more balanced?, but rather, is it totally balanced? There are over 54,000° combinations°° of ability scores. From 3, 3, 3, 3, 3, 3, to 18, 18, 18, 18, 18, 18; and everything in between. With Point Buy this gets reduced to a few hundred that...

D&D General How Did You Generate Your Most Recent Character's Stats?

I think that is "advance to level 3" rather than "Option 3". So they created 1st level characters with either Option 1 or Option 2. It looks like at least 4 players chose option 2 (yay!). Then, they advanced these characters to 3rd level.

D&D General How Did You Generate Your Most Recent Character's Stats?

Well that's just it, if you don't like what you rolled you can choose Point Buy instead. But yes, you get one chance at rolling.

D&D General How Did You Generate Your Most Recent Character's Stats?

I give my players the option to use Point Buy, the Standard 4d6 method, or my Dice Point method with 4 points (maybe 5). I also point out that the lowest score you can get with Point Buy is an 8, but, the highest score you can get is a 15. 😈 Limited risk deserves limited reward.

D&D General How Did You Generate Your Most Recent Character's Stats?

I used the Dice Point system, combining the thrill of rolling with the control of point buy. You roll 1d4+1d6+1d8* for each ability score, in order! But before you do that, you get 3 points to spend on your ability scores. Spending 1 point allows you control over the toss of one die (most...

D&D General D&D Dungeon Map Design: Good and Bad

I draw a line from the center of the front of the door to the corner where the hinge is located. Knowing where the hinge is tells us how the door swings, and if we can knock the hinges off to breach the door. The front of the door is the side without the hinge. In the image we can see two sets...

Yeah, you are preaching to the choir with me on that one. I think indicating the positioning of occupants supports a certain kind of play style. One that Fourth Edition in particular was pushing. I have to remind myself that my preferred play style is just one of several, or maybe even many.

I still use use the white bubble doors on my maps. Does anyone have strong opinions about those? I don't like it when the doors are hard to see because the artist decided to draw them to scale. This makes then difficult to discern from windows. I also like the extra room inside a bubble door...

D&D General D&D Dungeon Map Design: Good and Bad

Agreed, but I don't like the chambers to be completely bare either. I like to have some dungeon dressing included in the Dungeon Master facing Dungeon Map where it can impart some of the character of the room. But yes, things that can easily move around like chairs, crates, and barrels might be...

D&D General D&D Dungeon Map Design: Good and Bad

Cool! I've been doing this for years. I also do it for ceiling heights. I put a line under the number to indicate differences in flooring elevations relative to the overall 0-ft. level, I put a line over the number to indicate a ceiling height. This information is for me on the Dungeon Map...
